My 1975 Yamaha CA-600 amp sounds awesome with my 600's. I don't even need to touch the treble/bass. A Denon audio/video receiver is going to have a junk op amp headphone out. BTW, older cans such as the well regarded 600 ohm AKG Sextett aren't even close to the HD600's.

Your receiver probably needs to be recapped. My 600's sound awesome on my vintage Yamaha CA-600 and it's not as powerful as the 939. I'm not using stock pads, however. I'm using chinese "knock offs" which are thicker and add more weight to the sound. (Almost like a HD650/HD600 hybrid).

I think some of the Sennheiser discontent is due to amp matching...or mismatching. A warmish sounding DAC on top of that is going to give you warmth overload.

Are the Hifiman HE6SE's really that bad with the headphone jack on vintage receivers? I have a Yamaha CA-600 and I do not want to use the speaker taps.

That's the way I was with the 6XX/650. I had multiple pairs too. I also had multiple pairs of 660s, which I no longer have, but I liked them better than the 650's. I've only had one pair of 600's and I still have them. I think I might try one more pair of 660's since I've made a few changes to...

I find the 650's the champion of dull in the 6 line. I don't get any dullness from my 600's. Sometimes I actually find them too bright. I'm thinking about getting another pair of 660's. But I'm not paying fool price for them.

You can get a bit more detail out of them if you remove the 'disc' pads.

What is it you don't like about the 660's?
