Hi, I've been experiencing this problem for a while now and not too sure where to find the solution. basically, i am using winamp 5.03. I have a playlist that contains both ogg and mp3 files. Whenever it goes from playing an ogg file to an mp3 file, it will start buzzing and it gets louder...

I was in the same boat as you earlier. I decided on the the iriver ihp1-20. I rip my files EAC alt-preset standard and listen with a pair of shure e2cs. It sounds great to me. no problems at all and nothing to complain about. The new firmware would be a plus, but I'm happy with the player as is...
