Sound quality becomes pointless when the cables aren't able to transmit audio to the driver. They sound amazing, I love the way they sound but I shouldn't have a $20 pair of sonys that are 5 years old and are in better shape than something that costs 20x more. Their durability is lacking.

Here is more "marketing speak" for you from amazon.com, that suggests a different sound signature.  I can see why he would think they would sound different, since it says its "specifically tuned for the Astell&Kern AK100 & Ak120", and then goes on to say "The AKR01 is based on Final Audio Design...

I always thought the controller added more weight to the cable and put more strain strain reliefs. Granted the controller isn't really very heavy but the strain reliefs aren't exactly heavy duty either. I just can't believe that they just changed the color of the housings and called it the x11...

Actually the headphone out on the xfi titanium pro is 300 ohms according to creative's website.  You shouldn't need an amp to get the most out of your headphones.  

I would suggest the V-Moda Crossfade m100's, they sound perfect for what you are looking for..  They have a lot of bass and are built like a tank.  Also they are very customizable so she can make them "look pretty". Innerfidelity has an excellent review on them...
