The E500s do not require and amp but they sure do kick-ass with a Tomahawk!

I own a Tomahawk and just recently had the same problem. The cable tips on a new cable were a fraction smaller than the ones on my other cables that work fine. This was causing the same problem you described. Try some other cables and see if you can get a better connection.

I defintely get imrpoved sound quality when using the headphone out of my X5 or my D2 through my Tomahawk. You need to adjust the volume and settings properly though. There are plenty of posts on how to accomplish this.
