I had the same problem with mine. It turned out to be the 3.5mm cable. I replaced it with another one I had laying around and now they work flawlessly.

ATH-ws770is (~$60) These are for the money very nice, very bass heavy headphones. They are also exceedingly comfortable. If I had to buy one pair of headphones under $100, these would it.
