So the lang file defines the list of words that the device needs - and the voice file is a tagged stack of mp3 clips? I changed the menu on the X3 - removing everything except bookmarks, files and settings to simplify the interface. All fine - but in the settings the voice and the screen don't...- Idaho

I do it partly because he's a mate, and partly because I think it's so ridiculous that the technology to make life easy and fun for blind people is long since been developed, but no manufacturer is interested. All the money is in selling shiny colour screens to teenagers. He has a sansa which...- Idaho

Thanks. Unfortunately I've already sent the X3 to my blind friend. I will see if he gets fed up with mumbling Marvin before changing. The voicebox SPEEX voice is the best. It's really clear and well spoken. Shame we can't generate the file from that. I don't understand how the voice file...- Idaho

Seemed to work first time! Thanks masseo1. The voice seems to be some gloomy old robot! Still getting a panic error every so often. But it auto reboots and gets on with it.- Idaho

I tried downloading a voice file from rockbox and putting it in the langs folder - but that didn't work. Also I couldn't figure out why the files were specific to a device. I'd be very grateful if you could elaborate a little on the method I would need to use to get the menus speaking. Thanks...- Idaho

In answer to my own question, it is the same process to customise the main menu. The only issue being that the system menu doesn't appear. Possibly it is triggered by something other than the default system_menu name.- Idaho

Ah! Here it is. Masseo1 - dumb question - but where do I run the "make voice" compiler? Is it on the device itself? The latest update makes the individual file talk files work perfectly.- Idaho

I reset to stock, then set up Rockbox again with the new release. Not sure if I did something wrong. It worked well - but again crashed when I tried and add voice. I changed the Voice settings to: Voice Menus = Yes Voice directories = off use directory.talk clips = Yes Voice file...- Idaho

Great news about the update XVortex! Unfortunately I didn't go about updating correctly. I think I should have reverted to stock first. It's crashed out... and I am trying to work out how to force it to shut down. Once I work out what I have done wrong, I will do some more testing.- Idaho

I could be wrong (don't have the device to hand), but it just boots off the card. You can take the card out, boot to stock and then put the card in. Apologies if I'm wrong. Can check tomorrow night.- Idaho
