    Stax SR-X9000

What was broken? I have a T8000 at home with my 009S and although it isn’t totally lacking bass, my 007tII has much more punch in the bass. Very surprising. Both amps completely stock. Feeding the two amps from balanced outputs of either a Benchmark DAC3 or an RME ADI-2 Pro. The 8000 sounds...

    Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A

Not sure if there is really any effective difference - there's four different reference level outputs you can set, which have higher output voltage with volume set to 0dB: +4dBu (close to consumer RCA I think), +13dBu (consumer XLR like most stereos), +19dBu, and +24dBu (pro XLR). Volume/voltage...

    Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A

I have the Jot set around 10 o'clock and use the volume on the RME. I'm connecting the RME to the Jot with balanced outputs with the RME set to +13dBu output level, and I adjust the volume on the RME (instead of the Jot), for vinyl I keep it between -10 and -2, for digital tracks which have...

    Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A

I also have an RME with a Jot R, and leave the baffle switch on to cut the mid/treble. I listen to a mix of everything from orchestra, piano, acoustic jazz, classic rock, modern rock, funk, fusion, electronica, and without EQ I feel the Raal are too bass light. I'm not a bass head, but I also...

    The Stax Thread III

No shame, I listen to pretty much every style of music, actually most of what I listen to is pretty far from the Carpenter's Wheelhouse. But to my ears and my heart, Karen Carpenter has the voice of an angel, and anything with her singing is just amazing.    Then there's this:  ...

    The Stax Thread III

I've been listening to my 4070s a lot these days (with the Stax 727II, and a Burson Conductor DAC), they are one of my favorite headphones (with some EQ - see below).   I found I had to wear a baseball cap to get them to fit nicely, which isn't a big deal for me since I pretty much walk around...

    Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

Just got my pair. I'm listening to them through a Burson Conductor at home, and used one of the little FiiO rigs at work. for my point of reference, my main headphones these days are the TH-900 via the Burson Conductor, but I have a bunch of other gear I've accumulated over the years, my...

    HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone

I ordered (and received) the Lyr, for my HE-6 cans. Sounds great. There's a couple threads going on in the Amp forum on the amp in general, not sure how many people are HE-6 users, but I put in some comments there.   Quote:

Schiit Lyr Just Showed Up, Thought Ide Post A Couple Pics

The input to the amp has a big effect on where you put the volume control: http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/schiit/11.html   I'm using a Headroom Micro DAC which is fairly high output, especially compared to a computer line out/etc., and I have the volume at 11:30 with HE-6 planars and it...

My impressions of HE-6 vs HD800 vs Stax SR-007

I have the HE-6, and Stax 4070, AKG K-1000, Senn 580 and other phones to compare to (and owned Senn 800s for a while, and have heard O2s a few times, as well as the venerable Senn Orpheus) and I don't notice this at all on the HE-6. I'm using a Schiit Lyr right now with them, but I also didn't...

    Schiit Lyr Shipping! Impressions?

West coaster reporting in. Received the Lyr today. I'm at work and can't really do serious listening, but I brought my Hifiman HE-6 cans and it sounds great with those. Surprisingly I still have to turn the volume on the Lyr to 11-11:30 (on the clock scale), however, it is ideal to get the...

    Considering Headroom Micro Stack Package

The Micro stack is awesome for the money. The Micro DAC is high output too (voltage I think), so it drives headphone amps really well (I use it with a Stax setup and it rocks). The Micro Amp is *very* powerful, it can drive my Hifiman HE-6 headphones, and sounds great with Sennheiser 580/600...

My impressions of HE-6 vs HD800 vs Stax SR-007

Quote: Thanks for mentioning this, didn't occur to me to try this, I didn't know the DAC1 even had jumpers for this.   As you mention, I set it up at 0dB and the HE-6 cans are sounding great. Nothing else I have can really drive them, waiting for the Schiit Lyr, considering Decware...

My impressions of HE-6 vs HD800 vs Stax SR-007

Note with the Benchmark DAC1 driving the HE-6, to get full output of the DAC1 you need to pull out the internal jumpers that reduce the gain on the headphone output, so you have 0dB on the output and not -10 (or -20). You can find the location of the jumpers in the manual online at their web...

HD800 with macbook air. Amp Advice...

I'm not sure I even understand the analogy (if there is one). When you buy a Ferrari, you buy a Ferrari, you don't buy wheels and a frame and ask for an engine. When you buy Senn headphones, you gotta set up a system and it isn't all from Sennheiser. I have a Macbook Air and a USB DAC or...
