they are fine without an amp, but that doesn't mean some don't find them even better with one. basically, if you like the e5 sound, you can't lose with or without the amp.

i'm one of the few who has a problem with the gain in amps, so i listen to my 650s straight out of my ipod. sounds better than anything else: md33s, er6is, e5s, cm7s, 580s. ipod mini sounds better than 3g 40gb ipod, though. not saying 650s are better without an amp, just that it's still pretty...

bought a stand for hand towels at ross. maybe $8? holds 580s and 650s with ease.
