I believe it's a combination of type of cables and how you use them. I have only had problems with koss porta pro (3 pairs! duh..).

Sweat contains lots of salt. So yes, I believe it can kill everything that can corrode.

I need to recommend the v-JAYS. They screeeaaam!

I have had my v-JAYS for like 2 months soon and just love them . Punchy lows and detailed over all. Far better than the Koss Porta Pro I owned and trashed 2 times due to cable issues. I acutally find them better than my MS-1's with some type of music.

Ear wax maybe?

I paid a lot more for my q-JAYS Good price for good earbuds!

JAYS v-JAYS are cool and portable. I wouldn't go with the Grados mentioned if portable is an important factor. They do sound good however but so do the v-JAYS.
