I think they are supposed to be used wirelessly whenever possible. The cable seems to be just a makeshift solution for sources with no bluetooth i.e. airplanes.

Yeah, it is absolutely unbearable on the mac, whereas my iPhone 6s+ works fine with some occasional hiccups.

So I finally got the kse1500 and I'm pretty amazed by the sound they are capable of producing. But is there any way to make them usable on a macbook pro via USB without the popping? Sorry if that has been addressed extensively before.

i used to have the same problem while i was using windows. if an external drive shows up with the wrong letter, you can just reasign a own letter. here's the guide. i think if you use high letters like Z, the drive letters should stay the same.
