you can also try using a m-audio transit which will convert usb -> optical digital out to DAC/digital receiver. i am using the transit with an old dell laptop and it works very well!

Thanks for the help. So I connected the archos unit using the cord shown above to my A/V receiver that I use in my home theater and it worked fine! It must be a compatibility issue with the Bel CAnto Dac1 then? Oh well - I guess this will give me an excuse to buy a new DAC.
