3-10 Gigs w/ FM tuner built in... Does it exist?
You could consider the new iRiver Hxx models. They offer 1, 5, 10, and 20GB models. It won't be available until the end of next month here in the States but it's smaller than the iPod mini, has a color screen and a FM tuner. Check out misticriver.net for more info. edit: fixed url- dohcmark8

is there a high quality portable recording unit?
iRiver H120 or H140. It has analog and digital line in and out, it can record in mp3 and wav. It would be perfect for what you want. BTW, the recording quality is the best of all mp3 players. Although it can only do 16-bit, 44khz.- dohcmark8
