Swiss gold metal filter on my Technivorm drip coffee machine.  I noticed a difference switching from paper, does allow more of the oils and flavor to go into the coffee with no grounds going into the coffee assuming you've ground at the right coarseness.

Coffee is > 97% water, definitely helps to use purified water.  I use a reverse osmosis unit I bought from Costco that's under my sink.  Overtime I think it works out to be not much more $ than a Brita unit, but don't have to worry about filling up pitchers, etc.
