I've tried out different combinations with solid state and tube amps and different sources and came back to something I haven't expected so far.   My personal ideal combination for the HD800 is -you probably won't believe it- :   HD800 + Corda Opera + Denon DVD-A1XV (Source Direct Mode)...

DT880 is best as 600ohms version and with a decent amp.   DT990Pro has accented highs and bass. And it does everything except the soundstage worse than DT880.   DT990Pro is a fun-headphone. I hate it very much.   DT880/600 is acceptable, but in general I don't like the beyer-sound...
