entry-level portable amp?
If budget is a big concern, then start off with a CMOY variant, like a Mint, or Go Vibe. $40-$60 should get you there. If you don't want any change from the $100-150, also consider a portable PIMETA. Stephen (Thrice) looks like he has lowered the Ebay price down to $100 on them. A search (try...- CWW

5g ipod --> (most popular port. amp on head-fi?) --> ER4p?

HELP - Selecting OPA2132, 627, or AD8620
Thanks for the replies. My take on the SM was definitely at full charge, though I'm one who thinks they can hear battery degradation long before obvious clipping. Makes me wonder how OPA627's are ever expected to work in single-9V equiped amps (not SuperMacro). RE: SR-71. I haven't heard...- CWW

HELP - Selecting OPA2132, 627, or AD8620
My SM V1 w/ a pair of 627's fell out of my brief case (bag) yestarday So, I'm thrust into the portable amp market again . My question relates more to chips than, amp makers, I think. I have a JMT Penguin w/Burr Brown OPA2132's (OPA132) that always sounded more detailed in the treble than...- CWW

PLEASE Help me choose a Discman
Panasonic 470 and 570 each had selectable ESP off/10sec/40sec, so you can choose your compression. These are older (4-5yr) models, so no mp3/atrac, no good amp, just great battery life and line outs. There are probably tons of others folks could mention. The Panny's were very highly rated on...- CWW

Nice article comparing old-school PCDPs
Listening to a PCDP unamped seems counter to me, too. It just confuses the discussion, IMO. I have awoken from a longgg slumber, last post 3/2002, to come hear in a white flagged quest for the right HD (er, flash) player. The culture here has changed, as expected, and PCDP's now fully seem to...- CWW

PJB-100 ... best way to record MP3's?
Johnnylexus, I just returned my PJB 6000 to best buy, yestarday. It would automatically power down when fully charged, even if the auto shutoff were extended. Being that it tops out at about 192kbs encoding before the dreaded clicks start that are so common to these units, I never got clean...- CWW

Oh no...I have to buy an MD recorder!
Quote: It's not as good as a nice DAT machine for portable recording (nothing is), but it's definitely very good quality. Thank you for moderating your statement that MD means high quality live recordings. I don't even think MD players are compatible with most of the microphones that...- CWW

Oh no...I have to buy an MD recorder!
QUOTE: JJDyn0mite, the Archos simply can't compete for high-quality live recording. ...neither can MD. Its sort of regarded as a skectch pad device. Its not high-quality in the arena of live recording equipment. The Archos does not record live, but the only bad reviews I've seen of it are...- CWW

Cmoy amp with Ety ER4S?
Here's two choices: One: Make a 4X cable with 22 ohm resistors going to the P's and you'll essentially have a louder 4S. Even Don Wilson of Etyomotic said the frequency responce is very similar and I'd aggree. It's 6db louder. The only loss I note is some debateable shrinkage of soundstage...- CWW

Oh no...I have to buy an MD recorder!
The Sharp supposedly also has a better than Sony graphic for figuring out the recording levels. For live recording, other input I've seen on the MD boards, etc, has been in favor of the one point stereo mics such as the Sony ECM-907 ($90) and the Audio Technica AT-822 ($250). Using binaurals is...- CWW

Simple MD vs CD portable comparison
Tim D, Feel like I'm on the same page as you. Fry's has the coverter, huh? $20?! Anyone else heard of a digital cable to optical for MD? Half the problem seems to be always playing roulette with setting the levels on the MD recording using line so that you get the dynamics in full w/o the...- CWW

Great MD package deal!
This MD is supposed to play every bit as well as Sharp's more expensive recorders and can also be had for 139$ at ecost.com. MDLP is a feature you might miss with the unit, however. It doubles the capacity, I believe, for marginal sound degradation. MDLP 4 is supposed to be poor, but...- CWW

Total Airhead vs. cmoy
To color things a bit more. I don't have the TA, but do have a Penguin (www.pepermints.com) JMT amp. I won't make a comparison about something I don't have. To add to the posts about battery life, I'll say I noticed the same thing with regard to slow sound degradation on the JMT. For good...- CWW

Isolation in canal phone question
The easiest thing to do is go to your local drug store (CVS in the states) and buy some earplugs. they come in 25db to 29db isolation range, I think, which should give you an idea about how good 20db will be. Be sure to role them a bit before putting them in. CWW- CWW
