I am looking for a cable to connect an Archos Recorder to a coaxial RCA-type input, and this thread says that the Archos is coaxial. That being said, I have only managed to use my Archos' digital output with a mini-toslink to optical cable. How can that be?

My 0.02 is that it serves the same purpose as the grill cloth you'd find on any consumer speakers: protection, shielding, etc...if anything it dampens the sound.
