MG Head DT pot shunt saga

MG Head DT pot shunt saga

So I thought I'd make another simple mod to my MG Head with 47k pot input->wiper shunt resistors as recommended by Videoshielded.... Yeah Right!!! In the process of simply soldering the Caddocks to the stock Alps pot I lost the right channel. Input to wiper is now open. So off to angela.com I...

    X-Can review in Stereophile

They've reviewed the X-Can before. This is a rehash for the most part. When it comes to headphone amps they're very hodge podge. The Cary SET amp sounds good as does the Orpheus, but then everything else is pretty much the same.... Brian.

Alps pot fried when shunting!! - MG Head DT

Ordered the Alps Blue Velvet from Angela Instruments. Incidentally after completely desoldering the stock MG Head DT pot, I noticed a stamp 100KAX2 which is the same stamp I see in the picture of the Blue Velvet on the angela.com site. The stock pot, however is not in a blue plastic casing...

Alps pot fried when shunting!! - MG Head DT

I'm going to order an Alps from Angela.com I guess. It's a tad larger but I think there is room to spare in the MG Head. Thanks for the leads. FWIW, anyone have experience comparing the Blue Velvet to the TKD ? The TKD is about $60 from Percy and about the same size as the Alps. Just...

Alps pot fried when shunting!! - MG Head DT

Whoops. Cut and paste error on my part! My problem is the size constraints inside the MG Head DT. The current pot has a height of about 22mm and there is barely any room to spare. These measure 1.25" square according to the auction which converts to 31.75mm by my calculations... Brian.

Alps pot fried when shunting!! - MG Head DT

So I picked up a couple Caddock 47k to shunt the Alps pot in my MG Head DT, and low and behold I appear to have fried the left channel! The volume was uneven after the mod so I removed the resistors and took these measurements with the Fluke: Left Channel: input to wiper : OL input to...

Soldering Iron, Multimeter and other questions.

I own and use Weller soldering stations, and would recommend them. The Weller WES50 is a good, reasonably priced unit. That's what I have at home. As far as Multimeters go, the sky is the limit. It really depends on what kinds of things you want to do with it. But I would stick with Fluke or...

    MG Head Modification, Stage 1

Initial Sound Report: This is proving to be a nice bang-for-the-buck mod to the MG Head. Bass response is improved and is still tight. The extra bass is certainly not dramatic, but these Tungsrams aren't bass champions to begin with, either. However the improved detail I'm hearing now, is quite...

    MG Head Modification, Stage 1

    MG Head Modification, Stage 1

Update: Had ants in my pants this morning and since I live across the street from work, here I am.... So I've shortened the leads on the Auricaps to mere stubs that BARELY reach around the caps' girth to the C1 and C2 solder points... The aquarium pump like hum: almost gone. Almost but not...

    MG Head Modification, Stage 1

Well in about 5 minutes before I left work this evening, I slapped the Auricaps into the MG Head DT. I now have annoying transformer-like buzz in the left ear. No time to tweak before leaving the office, though. I think the leads on the auricaps can stand to be shortened some still. I'm also...
