Thread of Basic Questions
: I would suggest 'attack' is the speed with which a sound-producing thing (such as a loudspeaker or other transducer, or an instrument such as a piano or a guitar or a violin, or even an entire space such as a cathedral) can respond to a stimulus (such as a very fast rise in voltage hitting a...- aukhawk

Live Concert/Performance in FM Radio - All Analog?
In the UK at least, FM radio routing (from studio to transmitter) was the EARLIEST practical implementation of digital processing of high-quality audio (such as music) - pre-dating CDs or digital mastering in recording studios by a full 10 years. In 1972 (first year of operation of the BBC's...- aukhawk

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!
A commonly-used storage format in studios in the late '80s was DAT. That is a 16/48 format. I know, I was there.- aukhawk

To crossfeed or not to crossfeed? That is the question...
I think this link is an interesting read: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/bbc-proms it describes in fairly strategic terms, the mic setup for the annual Proms season in the Royal Albert Hall. This appears to have evolved steadily and incrementally ever since BBC stereo broadcasting...- aukhawk

Thread of Basic Questions
All true but there is an easier way, I think, and that is simply to ease up on your inner audiophile and trust more to common sense. These tests have been done by others, and reported here and elsewhere - there is no need for me to re-invent this wheel. For example, it seems to me that all...- aukhawk

Why do we allow manufacturers to make unsubstantiated claims?
It's not exactly unique to the audio world is it. Health food, skin care products, anti-ageing cream, most of it is probably placebo. My partner swears by a well-known formulation for the relief of joint pain. It's not cheap, and it's available off the shelf under various brand names, and at...- aukhawk

Annoying "ringing" sound in classical music piano recordings
This is beside the point but those Uchida recordings were made by PHILIPS. (Decca have subsequently taken over the Philips catalogue and rebadged them.) I'm tempted to add - you can see from the cover art that SHE can hear it! :smile_phones: I often hear a (very slight) buzzing or clangourous...- aukhawk

¿Frequency Range of Music?
If you're calling a doubling in frequency (eg 10kHz to 20kHz) an octave then that is 8 notes, not 7 (the clue is in the name). (It's 7 intervals, but they are not equally spaced - or it is 12 equal semitone intervals in Western music convention.) I do agree with Bigshot's general point...- aukhawk

accuracy is subjective
New poster here. It seems to me that it is fairly simple to make an objective assessment of vinyl vs digital - simply needledrop a vinyl record and digitally record the result. Then just compare the two preferably blind (admittedly that's not very easy - synchronisation and...- aukhawk
