How do-able is this?
The British mag Electronics World had a project like this a couple of years back using accelerometers for motion detection. I'll dig through my archives tomorrow and see if I can find it. I'm not sure how successful it was sonically.- arktraveller

24-bit audio: hype or not?
Most new 24 bit converters have trouble bettering the old BB PCM63 20 bit chips, but I gotta admit are usually a lot cheaper. 144 dB dynamic range? Wheres that liquid nitrogen..... [reference to the 2V output of a CDP, 144dB DR is equivalent to the thermal noise of a 6.9 ohm resistor at room...- arktraveller

Is this the end of DVD?
I really think it is a case of, does the average consumer see any benefit to the $$$ outlaid?. In most cases, in my experience, no. I took my DVD (Pioneer 535) to my brothers house today to watch a movie, and also to see how it compared to his PS2. His wife could not see any difference...- arktraveller

The most insane DIY project ever
I really admire James craftsmanship and dedication, and have told him so before on the Asylum. Can't wait to see what he does next. But for extreme, take a look at Mr Roggerios system. Those big things at the back are his basshorns driven by 6 Altec 515's per side...- arktraveller

surround sound as a novelty
I reckon for music it's a great big marketing inspired novelty, simply to sell you more gear, and different versions of the software. Hell, most producers and bands couldn't make a good sounding record if their lives depended on it. So give them 5.1,6.1,7.1 or 862.1 and we'll simply have aural...- arktraveller

DVD-A = ? SACD = ?
I've been away for a while so if this has already been said, sorry. SACD does have copy protection, but due to the way it's encoded, the copy protection info does not have to be a part of the audio signal, so it's inaudible. Sony are very coy about this but Tom Meitner said so in an interview...- arktraveller

DVD-A = ? SACD = ?
Actually the DSD technology behind SACD is not new. At the time of CD's public relese back in 1983, the DBX company (yes, the noise reduction people) had a digital recorder/player using almost identical technology as Sony does now. It was called the DBX 700 and it sampled a single bit at 700kHz...- arktraveller
