Xonar D2 vs STX
I'm looking to upgrade my Auzen Prelude - I've finally had enough of Creative drivers, and won't ever go back to any card that uses them. I'm considering either the Asus Xonar D2 or the Essence STX. I already have a dedicated headphone amp (Matrix M-Stage) so won't be amping my HD650 using the...- AlfBaxter

Replacement foam eartips for Etymotic ER-6i
Yes - Shure black olive tips fit ER-6i perfectly, seal better than the original foamies and IMO warm up the sound a bit.- AlfBaxter

best op amps
X2 for the metal can version of the LM4562 (think it's LM49720HA). Less cold sounding than the 4562, with more refined top end and fuller bass. (But still very slightly fatiguing at high volumes. Worth it IMO for the clarity and instrument separation.)- AlfBaxter

UE 600 (SuperFi 5) vs Etymotic mc5 vs Etymotic hf5
Definitely RE0. I don't agree with the negative comments about the UE600 on here but they definitely aren't neutral. I would actually go for HF5 if I were you. Compared to the Etys the UE phones are coloured, and less accurate as joker says. But they are also - to my ears - more spacious, airy...- AlfBaxter

Matrix M-Stage amp review: simple, cheap, and excellent.
Quote: I should have mentioned that, sorry - I was using HD650. I tried it in Class A too, and I think you're right that the treble gets less sharp, but in my case I think I liked it less - sounded a bit smeared. With the HD650 it isn't piercing at all, just very crisp and punchy. I...- AlfBaxter

What's the best quality audio file?
Homeopathy can be tested, and has been tested. Double-blind trials show it does no better than placebo. Music files can be tested in the same way. Install Foobar2000 ABX comparator, see if you can reliably tell the difference between two files of your choosing (e.g. a FLAC and a LAME encoded...- AlfBaxter

Matrix M-Stage amp review: simple, cheap, and excellent.
For anyone still rolling opamps with the M-Stage, I can strongly recommend the LME49720HA. It's the metal can version of the LM4562NA, and for some reason it's much better. The bass is richer and deeper, and the highs are more refined, but the overall sound retains the punch and clarity of the...- AlfBaxter

Matrix M-Stage amp review: simple, cheap, and excellent.
Quote: I wasn't too impressed with them, but I'm not saying they are fake. All I'm saying is I have some OPA627 I know to be genuine (ordered from Cimarron tech) and I absolutely love the sound I get on my HD650 with the OPA627 in class-A - punchy, crystal clear top end, really tight...- AlfBaxter

Repair Super.fi 5 Pro?
Thanks for your reply. How do I do that, is there a company that offers this service or a head-fier who can do it? They also need to be fixed, because like I said the female socket on the left earpiece has fallen off.- AlfBaxter
