    The Stax Thread III

Can anyone recommend the best tubes to use with the stock T1S & 007T (old type w/ Normal bias) amps? Would a 007T with the CSS and 6S4A mods be almost as powerful output as a KGST (& sound as good)?

Most fun headphones you've ever heard...

HD212 Pro's have too much bass. You're better off paying more for studio headphones, such as AKG, Beyerdynamic or Audio Technica. As far as fun headphones I've heard, I would say the old vintage AKG's, as well as Stax Lambda's. Electrostatic phones are very engaging and transparent.

What are the headphones you've regretted purchasing and why?

I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 212 Pro's, and they had way too much bass. And the bass was quite artificial, as well. Quite unpleasant to listen to. They were advertised as DJ headphones, which usually means the bass is exaggerated a lot. I later bought a pair of K141M's, which were ten times...

Looks like STAX is going to release a new earspeaker (probably flagship)

The SR-X9000 is difficult to obtain at the moment (and expensive). I was surprised that Stax came up with a new design (but, based on the 009). I thought they were going to keep doing refreshes of the 009 (like the SR-009S). There seems to be a lot of scope for improvement of electrostatic...

What headphones have you grown out of?

I used to have the AKG 141 Monitor. The sound was great, better than any headphones I'd heard up until that point. But I wouldn't go back to them now, as they were uncomfortable to wear for long periods (being the on-ear type).

Why Closed Back Headphones Sound Worse Than Open Back

The sound is more natural if they are open-back, as the sound can leave the headphone, instead of being forced to reverberate inside the can. You get better sound going into your ear, if some of it is also going out into the room you're in.

Changing ear-pads will change the sound?

I prefer pleather pads to velour. But both types have advantages and disadvantages. Pleather are the type vintage headphones originally came with, and probably give a better seal around the ear.

Stax, the bottom vs. the top?

The L700 would be significantly better than L300 & L500, because it's driver design is based on those of the SR-009. And the soundstage would be similar to normal Lambda's you had, as the physical design of it is almost the same. Not sure how the L700 would compare to the 007 or 009. The SR-009...

A Rhetorical Thread: Rank the best headphone companies

I would say, without a doubt, the top three companies are: 1. STAX (Lambda, Omega series- some of the world's best headphones) 2. Sennheiser (HD600, HD800, Orpheus & HE-1) 3. AKG (some of the most natural-sounding and musical headphones) The order after that, I'm not so sure of.

Are we doing this all wrong? Why are we not asking the real question of what the artists are actually using to listen to their music?

A lot of music tends to be recorded using condenser mics (which use technology that's similar to electrostatic headphones & speakers). So, if you want music that's accurate to what was recorded, you would go for electrostatic. But dynamic headphones (such as those mentioned above) or speakers...

    Headphone recommendations

Perhaps you could go back to the vintage AKG's, if you want a more natural (or fun) sound. Electrostatic headphones (such as Stax) are known for not being fatiguing when listening for long periods. For listening for fun, some people go for dynamic headphones, as they tend to have more bass, and...

AKG K240DF quick first impressions... Now with pics!

The DF's are good all-rounders for any type of music (headphones with a lot of bass tend to overdo the bass, on some music genres that are already bass-heavy). But I can see how some people might say the DFs are too dry or flat-sounding. You also need an amp for them to get decent volume. With a...

    Best Electrostatic Headphone's For Detail

The best electrostatic headphones for detail would be one of these: Orpheus (HE-90) SR-Omega (1993) Orpheus 2 (HE-1) SR-X9000

    AKG K340 Electrostatic Phones

Is the K340 a fully electrostatic headphone, or a combination of electrostatic and dynamic (as it has five passive radiators on each side)? I've always wondered how they got an electrostatic headphone to run on the normal amplification that a dynamic headphone uses.
