That's a good question. I've always avoided traded due to that reason. I would think if you listed something for sale, then someone offered you a trade; then you hold the cards in that transaction and you would make the person that made the offer ship first and you would ship your item after receiving and inspecting the trade item.
If you offered something solely for trade and have an offer, I guess cross shipping seems the most fair.

It's standard practice for both parties to send their items out at the same time (often using the same shipping service) with the goal of both arriving on the same day...but you don't have to do it this way. Whatever both of you agree on is fine. A few times when I wanted to make things easier for the person I was trading with, I sent my package to them first, then they sent theirs after receiving it.
Standard trade etiquette :
1. don't be a dick.
2. Don't think so highly of your unwanted stuff to think someone is going to pay a premium for the priveledge of owning your used crap.
