Does enabling Spatial sound format (Windows Sonic for Headphones) as well as checking the box to Turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound, improve a normal 5.1 home theater system?

On a related note is Dolby Atmos for headphones any better?

If your playing a source with 5.1 (6-channel) audio and playing it thru to a 5.1 speaker setup, I'm guessing using Windows Sonic or turning on 7.1 virtual surround sound, will not improve the audio.
