OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player

General Information

Features

The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player is an exciting upgrade based on the highly acclaimed BDP-83. Already well known for its exceptional audio and video performance, the BDP-83 is upgraded with an all new analog audio stage and improved power supply to become the Special Edition. Designed for the discerning audio enthusiast, the OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player delivers an exceptionally wide dynamic range, ultra low distortion, accurate sound stage and jitter-free music clarity via its dedicated stereo and 7.1ch analog audio output.

The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition uses the state-of-the-art Sabre32 family of Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC) from ESS Technology. The Sabre32 family is known as one of the industry's highest performance audio DACs and are often found in high-end audiophile and professional equipments. The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition uses an 8-channel Sabre Premier (ES9006) DAC chip for its 7.1 multi-channel output. The dedicated stereo output uses another 8-channel Sabre32 Ultra (ES9016) DAC chip by stacking 4 DACs for each of the Left and Right channels to achieve even greater audio performance.

Just like the BDP-83 it is based on, the OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition is a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player featuring bit-stream and full decoding capability for high resolution audio tracks such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Designed for both home theater viewers and music listeners, it plays DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD) and standard CD with excellent video and audio performance in addition to Blu-ray Discs. For a detailed list of features, please refer to the BDP-83 Features and Specifications page.

OPPO Digital recommends the BDP-83 Special Edition to customers who primarily use the analog audio output to connect to either a dedicated stereo or a multi-channel surround system. For customers who primarily use the HDMI output to connect to an A/V receiver or directly to a TV/projector, and for customers who primarily use the optical/coaxial digital audio output, the standard BDP-83 is recommended.

New Head-Fier
Pros: Fast,Very dynamic& detailed great picture
Cons: feathery distortion in midrange on up
A benchmark Blu ray that plays Everything. The new Sabre Dacs from ESS tech readily support that benchmark status..My headphone amp is a rather maxed Ming-Da AE66 W/ dual soft recovery diode bridges; Cap upgrades  that allow me to hear  Very clearly, things that get lost in other amps.I swapped out the Acon lytics around the stereo Dac and op amp out; 3 total, and replaced them w/ /black gates bypassed w NX .47mf  And the music is 7-8/10, 10 being live.and it is improving sonically  as time allows. I have been looking & listening nonstop. It loads Blu ray movies much faster than other brands. This is a no brainer for someone getting into Blu Ray that has a big CD collection. It plays CD brilliantly; is rhythmic & dynamic
due to the Dacs internal jitter reduction/suppresion. Its fan is very quiet and overal build quality is good. the player responds very quickly to the remote commands. I am glad that I purchased the Nu force edition as they have done much to improve the picture & sound. Thanks Robert

Pros: Price to performance. Plays every format. Excellent CS. SABRE32 DAC chip. Great HD picture quality.
Cons: Chassis is the same as the 83 model. Drawer could be more sturdy. Runs a bit hot.
First off, this oppo 83SE arrived very well packaged. I mean very well.. Beyond the call of duty. Everything is neat & tightly, & comes with a carrying bag & two calibration disc, one for audio, one for video. They also include a 6FT HDMI cable which is un heard of.

The special in the special edition is the SABRE32 DAC along with a better Power supply. To fully benefit from the SABRE DACS you need to use a 2 channel system. The SABRE32 DAC chip reads like Fantasy football. 32bit. Dynamic range over 130 & THD a mind numbing -125. You really don't need a out board dac with this thing.

To put it bluntly, this DAC rocks & is arguably the best on market today. Very cutting edge, only a few commercial players use this DAC & they cost much more then the oppo.

Sound is of the up most clarity, with a clear, no frills focus on the music.. I would label it analytical & neutral. This could be in part due to my gear. I have neutral headphones & amp.. The noise floor is nearly non existent, & is about as black as you can get.. Very low distortion. Revealing detail & ambient nuances is this players Hallmark. It's a vacuum that just sucks every ounce of detail out of a recording. Bad recordings be damned. Pristine recordings have you one with the artist. Instrument timbre is well done.. If you like rich timbre, or a tonally rich sound in general, I would suggest combining a tube amp & 650 with the oppo83. This is the sort of player that has you scrambling to listen to your whole CD collection over again.

With the oppo83 all you hear is the music. Nothing gets in the way.. Very palpable. Hi rez audio pushes the envelope enough further.. Listening to 96hz recording material on the included demo disc is as close to the real thing as possible. Very impressive. I still prefer listening to HDCD on my Denon 5900.. IMO it just takes better advantage of the technology.

If you are looking for a hi end Blu ray universal player this is it. Of course there are better, but will cost you much, much, more, & the improvements won't be enough of a jump to satisfy those potential buyers.
