Advertising outside of the For Sale forum

I checked the "read first" threads in the "For Sale" forum, but I didn't find an answer to this (unless I missed it). Is it OK to advertise an item on sale in the "For Sale" forum, in other threads in other forums, specific to the device that's on sale? E.g., if I'm selling DAC "X" in the...

Please help a sick woman keep a roof over her head

I'm not usually into charity stuff, but I have worked with Victoria Strong every day for 2 years, and we've been friends ever since. This is a desperate call for help. Long story short: she's had to struggle almost her entire life, from being abused repeatedly as a child, to fighting cancer and...

    Audiophiles and subjective impressions

iRiver AK100: high output impedance sounds like crap! Hifiman HM-801: high output impedance sounds very musical! Sansa Clip+: flat FR sounds dull, lifeless! iBasso DX100: flat FR sounds full, realistic! Unnamed DAP: bass and treble roll-off sounds very analog, non fatiguing...

Is there ANYTHING that doesn't make a difference?

Audiophiles seem to hear differences everywhere, with everything. Is there anything at all that sounds "the same"?

    What is Head-Fi?

Is it a non-profit organization? A for-profit company? What is the legal status of Head-Fi, and its revenue? Does someone pay taxes on it? Does Head-Fi's activity fall under any kind of regulations? Is it a full-time job for anyone?

    Visual notification of subscription activity

On the mobile site, we get visual notification of subscription activity, in the form of a number (of affected threads) in a red circle. It would be nice to have the same on the "normal" website.

    Bandcamp promotion thread

For those who don't know, Bandcamp is an online (and legal) music download service where indie bands can easily promote and sell their work. Prices are set by the bands themselves; most of the time, they ask for a bare minimum (e.g. $7 for an album), but customers may pay more, if they so...

    Blind test: 6 DACs compared

Objectivists claim that all DACs that aren't severely broken sound the same. Audiophiles claim that different DACs sound different, more or less noticeably. I've been told, for instance, that a Clip+ and an iPod Classic sound completely different. What do you think? Here's a chance to find out...

    Wearing Comply tips in reverse

I recently got the Shure SE425 IEMs and I've been trying out every pair of tips that were included in the package, to see which would give me the best seal and the best comfort. I like the yellow foam tips a lot, but they're too small, so I ordered S-100 foam tips (all sizes) from Comply's...

iPod Classic LOD and headphone out measure the same

I RMAA'd my Rockboxed iPod Classic from the LOD and the headphone out, and they pretty much measure the same (except for the LOD crosstalk value that's a little weird - it doesn't show with the original firmware).

    Hisoundaudio Studio V RMAA

http://www.markuskraus.com/RMAA/studio/data.htm http://www.markuskraus.com/RMAA/studio2011/data.htm lol. With those amounts of distortion, that thing can't be "high fidelity". Edit: also of interest: http://www.mp4nation.net/blog/2010/03/hisoundaudio-studio-disection-and-impressions/

    EQ = sound quality?

Every time I buy new source equipment (lately: FiiO E7, iPod Classic), at first I feel that it sounds like utter crap. Like a $5 device. It sounds congested, muddy, imprecise. Then I turn on the equalizer and set it to my liking: the sound is completely transformed. It's open, clean, punchy...

Ogg Vorbis 256 kbps: can you tell the difference?

Download: A.flac, B.flac One of those files was encoded with Ogg Vorbis AoTuV (b6.03) at quality 8, resulting in a bitrate of approximately 256 kbps. Ogg Vorbis/AoTuV is said to be superior to MP3, so I'm wondering if you guys can tell the difference, especially those of you with high-end gear...

What are the arguments against double blind tests (incl. ABX)?

The argument for such tests is that if there's an audible difference, it should be detectable easily enough, even without any indication as to what is what (elimination of all bias and placebo effect). Failing that (the argument goes), any difference that was heard, was in fact imagined, due to...

De-emphasizing mids makes music sound more spacious to me

In other words, I use an EQ on both my Galaxy Nexus and my laptop with a FiiO E7 to lower mids and leave bass and highs intact. If I don't do that, music sounds 2-dimensional to me, everything sounds "too close to my head", if that makes any sense. Can someone explain why that is? Is it just me?
