My UM3X's are waiting at home for me. 1 week from US to AUS thanks to Mike at Frequency City Sound. Upgrading from shure e4c (using olives). I'm after a reasonable portable to complement my GS1000's . I think it's gonna be a long afternoon at work.

Yes. EQ to please my music receptors. For vocal dominated music I like flat because my music receptors like it that way. I think its a bad argument to say not to EQ because thats not what the sound engineer / musician mixed. People, do what pleases your ears not somebody else's. Experiment.

I have a D2 and e4c's. Only had the D2 for about a week so no long term listening. Definitely I have not heard any hiss. I've recently listened to a 3 y/o panasonic player, a creative zen V, and an iRiver LPlayer. D2 sounds better than all these. Can't comment on the other players you've listed...
