Well since a pot is designed to do exactly this (pad an input by varying amounts) I don't see why you're worrying about getting the right values so much.  Pots are designed based off of the equations used to calculate the fixed resistors in the link you gave, so I don't see what the problem is...

I'd say probably not much if any difference, but it really depends on what else is on your circuit and how good the power in your area is etc.  I started adding them to my builds because they're pretty cheap and they can only help.  Worst case you spend $10 for peace of mind.

I think it's a bit too early for anybody to say whether they'd be interested or not.  There's obviously a market for headphone stands since many people make and own them, but since you state no budget, design, etc. really it'd be better to make a prototype or two and then ask again otherwise...

That's what I get for over thinking the problem .  Makes sense apple implemented a graphical version of the shutdown command.  Though the applescript would still be functionally better if you spent the time to write it.  Probably not worth it though.
