It must be quite a while since Philips did hi-fi equipment. They're focussing a lot of TVs and streaming/portable audio these days. I'll have to look up some of that old equipment. Do you have any photos by any chance?

Denon definitely has strengths with its bass performance, at least across the headphone, earphone and amp ranges I've owned/heard. What was the Philips amp? That must have been quite a while ago.

Thanks Clie, that makes a lot of sense. It seems rather peculiar in the sense that to a lot of people 0dB means complete silence, and anything greater is a measurement of loudness relative to silence.

This has always bugged me: why, when I increase the volume of my amp, does the decibel number get lower? And for that matter, why is it measured in minus decibels?

Simply out of your list I'd opt for the ER-6is. They're not great for very heavy music, but they offer a very clear and balanced sound.

The Cowon D2 is an excellent player, and offers FLAC support which you should really consider using with the SE530s. But if you're not fond of touch-screens, the Creative Zen offers decent sound with very low harmonic distortion and a great signal to noise ratio.

Out of your list I wouldn't opt for the Custom-1s, simply because they're characteristically suitable mostly for vocals, jazz and acoustic stuff. Sennheiser do some excellent models for sure, but I find the Denon C551s are excellent for heavy metal. They have an exceptionally deep bass...

Some terrific replies, thanks very much. I'm currently using my D5000s with a Denon CX3 amp, and the sound is certainly what I like. But I've now got a Woo Audio 2 on the way. I know my headphones very well but this will actually be my first dedicated headphone amp.
