Nixie clock pictures
The watch only displays the digits while you are holding the button down in order to save battery power. Also, at $495 (actually sold out) it's severely overpriced. I built my clock for $30 total.- Prune

What kit? I didn't buy any kit. Nixie tubes are character display gas discharge tubes used before there were things like LCDs etc. -- neon lights with multiple cathodes, each one shaped as a character. As I said in the first post, you can buy cheap Nixies from this eBay seller...- Prune

No box yet... Time from mains frequency. No mains isolation transformer, no voltage doubler -- they ignite just fine with the rectified 115 VAC. Small transformer for the logic. Reset on power on; three buttons to set time. The six Russian IN-1 Nixies cost me a total of $10 US from...- Prune

Scriabin's later stuff seems to me borderline atonal -- not my cup of tea. The romantic period that Alkan comes from is my comfort zone -
Under-appreciated or little known classical music?
Since jude mentioned Alkan... Jack Gibbons' performance of Op. 39 (12 Etudes, Amazon.com ASIN B0000030PK) is much better than Hamelin's. I don't mean to knock Hamelin, his technical ability is supreme (and I actually talked to him shortly one time after a live performance and he seemed like a... -
Subjective vs measurements in the perception of sound quality
This is a bit off topic but I didn't want to start a new thread. We've discussed binaural recordings here, and the crosstalk-cancellation needed to play them properly over speakers. There are a number of commercial DSP units that do that to various success, but are generally very expensive. The...- Prune

Subjective vs measurements in the perception of sound quality
This directly contradicts Lipsh!tz: Harwood, H. "Audibility of phase effects in loudspeakers." Wireless World, January 1976, pp.30-32. User wimms at diyaudio also criticizes Lipsh!tz: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...853#post518853 However, the following shows that some localization...- Prune

Forget Omega II
I don't know if it's just one, but the main problem, besides the fear of high voltage, is the need to periodically clean the electrodes. But as KG pointed out, there are ways around that.- Prune

I cant hear the difference
With HD-580, I find the difference between META42 and Morgan Jones tube amp not all that great. The source is fine, DIY DAC that actually does sound better than the DVD player's analog output. Maybe too much feedback in the tube amp, and also 6DJ8 are supposedly not as 'tubey' sounding as other...- Prune

Subjective vs measurements in the perception of sound quality
Yes and no. This has been discussed at length at the diyaudio forums by people like Steve Eddy and myself. The problem is that many people, if they knew it was only placebo, wouldn't spend the money on it. Therefore subjectivist reviews, by not acknowledging the placebo effect, do a great...- Prune

Subjective vs measurements in the perception of sound quality
Look, the most appropriate measurement is, and it should be obvious, that of the human ear, and this is a point many audio objectivists miss. Measuring by electronic equipment is merely for practical convenience, but listening tests are a must for truly meaningful and comprehensive results. In...- Prune

Spending $3k on dynamic headphones is ridiculous, when you can spend less on top-end electrostatics, or even those extremely rare European plasma headphones that were sold back in the day.- Prune

Question for Mr Gilmore
The SK-630 sockets, amusingly larger than the tubes themselves: The sockets' inner tongues touching the screen contact ring on the tube connect to a ring around the inside top of the socket separated from the case by a dielectric, forming a screen bypass capcitor. When I was cleaning...- Prune

Silicone potting
The transformer doesn't vibrate, but its leakage flux makes my power supply steel chassis sing loudly (it's a 1500 W transformer). If I put it in a silicon steel box it will attenuate the leakage, but to prevent the box itself from humming instead, I have to fill it with something. Some people...- Prune
