Balanced connector for RSA amps - Where to buy?
In general I like the mini XLR. I'm wondering how small it is; I've never worked with it before. However I was disappointed to learn that Neutrik doesn't seem to make a circular connector in their miniCon series that had just 4 conductors. I've used these in the past and didn't find them too...- unclejr

Balanced connector for RSA amps - Where to buy?
I'm looking to go balanced at the moment, and one of the principle considerations is this connector ... it's going to be a PITA to work with. Granted it's been hacked very nicely, but the fact that the connector is not available in cable-ended (M only?), panel mount (F only?), and PCB mount (F...- unclejr

THE INTRUDER by RSA. balanced dac/amp. . Update available for even better sound. Just pay shipping.
Sorry if I missed it, but I've only seen a few references to the DAC upgrade. First, is it right to assume that all new units are pre-upgraded? And second, what exactly is the upgrade? It sounds like the DAC manufacturer was changed to Burr Brown maybe? Does it do 24-bit/96 kHz? Does it play...- unclejr

On a mission to like jazz
Haven't posted in awhile, though I read and skim a bit from time to time. This is such an interesting thread to me, because it was directed toward the goal of liking jazz, not just trying it out ... props to the OP for keeping it up; hope it's been fun. Quote: From reading through... -
The Official JRPG Thread (aka Japanese Role Playing Games)
Disclaimer: I am a complete novice to this genre. I tried learning how to play Persona 4 Golden, but I'm finding it extremely confusing. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of in game tutorials to explain what all the abbreviations mean, how the mechanics of the game work, and how to be...- unclejr

MS-2 (MS-2i) appreciation thread
Been away for awhile, mostly because I found what I wanted and was just enjoying it. Have since gone from AKG K701s to Grado RS-1s, also to q-Jays and ER-4s and SE420s, etc. Settled on ALAC-iPod-RSA Shadow-Westone UM3X with customs and have been absolutely loving nearly everything about that...- unclejr

Alternatives to 17" MacBook Pro?
Quote: Hey, thanks for the recommendation. I checked that thing out. Pros are it looks like an excellent piece of kit that, on paper, beats the MBP. Cons are that it's thicker, heavier, requires a heftier power supply (120 W v. 85 W I believe, though not sure what the actual power...- unclejr

Alternatives to 17" MacBook Pro?
Hi Head-Fi. I can't seem to find a straight, current answer to this question: are there any 17" alternatives to the MBP 17" that are roughly as strong/thin/"light"? I need an i7, room for two hard drives, optional optical (I don't care), discrete graphics, and a high res display. No price limit...- unclejr

I would be interested in a UM4X perhaps but not a 4, based on the differences between the W3 and UM3X (which is my far-and-away favorite among the universals I've tried!).- unclejr

pencil fi?
Lost some steam in this one, I see. For some reason I get the Paradise Pen (used to be Colorado Pen, I thought?) catalogue, and I was flipping through and noticed a Padrino 600 pencil that reminds me of the old Rotrings. I'm curious about the weight -- has anyone used one?- unclejr

Am I wrong to be leery of amps w/ li-ion built-in batts?
The Shadow and perhaps other RSA amps has a 3 year warranty that includes the battery. That gives me some confidence. I suspect RSA and others will have a solution for this in the future. Of course, let's just hope that the next gen of amps has a manual hand crank so we don't have to worry...- unclejr

OS X status bar
Re: Fonts. I've been using OS X and Debian for about 10 years now, but I do prefer ClearType to OS X's font rendering. I often preferred Linux font rendering in a terminal to OS X, in fact. Quote: Originally Posted by Bredin Yeah! They only added another bar that is thick and full...- unclejr

How important is hiss?
Currently I'd change my vote on this from "Hiss and annoyed" to "Hiss and not annoyed." There is a slight, slight hiss with the UM3X + RSA Shadow, but it is very low amplitude and pretty even-sounding (no large fluctuations).- unclejr

Are CDs obsolete
Heh. In 20 years, there will invariably be an article in Ether (the new Wired) about how the CD is making a huge comeback, much like vinyl is today. The CD is not dead but likely on the way out: more and more albums will be released download/online only. It's going to take one very successful...- unclejr

Custom Series Resistor Cable Questions
I am interested in doing a small experiment using your expertise and my gear. I have an ALO Audio Rx amp (and a Shadow on the way), and I am experiencing hiss from the Rx on the UM3X, source-independent. I noticed that my 74 (?) Ohm adapter removes all of the hiss from this chain but also...- unclejr

Hm, not thrilled with the UM56
Naturally after reading extensively about the UM56, I had no really clear expectations about what it would do. It's very clever: it took me 1,000 posts to figure Head-Fi out. The more you read, the crazier you get until your curiosity gets the best of you and you try things for your own damn...- unclejr
