[LIST][OPINION] Amp recommendations for Fostex/Denon Headphones.
Holy thread necromancy, Batman! Had you waited until next week if could have been a full 5 years on ice. :P That said, I have recently acquired a JDS Labs Element II that has proven to be a wonderful match for my Fostex TR-X00. I haven't tried it with my Denon AH-D2000, but of course would...- Packgrog

Post A Photograph Of Your Turntable
Did you have your 10x5 retipped? The person that bought my old 10x5 after I bent the cantilever had it rebuilt with a line contact stylus and boron cantilever (http://www.phonocartridgeretipping.com/) and was very happy with the results. I've long been curious what a rebodied Denon DL-103 with a...- Packgrog

Rockbox for iBasso DX90 dual boot with Mango (Stock Firmware)
I just discovered today (after being away from Head-Fi for a while) that there was a Rockbox port for the DX90. I guess Rockbox still hasn't developed support for output greater than 16/44? That's unfortunate. One thing that folks seem to be unaware of is that Rockbox will play 32-bit WavPack...- Packgrog

Philly area Meet Jan 28th 2018 Impressions Thread
Yeah, those would be interesting, especially if you have Toslink, electrical SPDIF, or mini USB (not micro) cables that could be fed into the iBasso D14. Being able to compare the devices' own analog outputs as well as how they feed an external DAC is an interesting comparison, and especially...- Packgrog

Philly area Meet Jan 28th 2018 Impressions Thread
OK, question: Assuming that there is another one of these meets in this area, does anyone have any portable hi-res DAPs that could be demoed? I'm somewhat aggravated by the fact that my MacBook Pro feeding 32-bit, 192kHz audio to my DAC/amp sounds WORSE than my lowly iRiver H120 outputting only...- Packgrog

Oh yeah, that style of wall rack will likely benefit a lot from some further careful isolation (those metal brackets probably ring like a bell). Some regular Herbie's grungebuster washers between the bracket and wall where the bolts go into the wall MIGHT be enough to do the trick. Otherwise...- Packgrog

Cool setup! If you ever have to rearrange the turntable setup, I would strongly recommend ditching the cork & rubber feet in favor of something like Herbie's Tenderfeet. I had a Mapleshade platform briefly on feet like that, and not only did they stain the hell out of the maple, but the also...- Packgrog

Yeah, I was surprised by how good the Babyface Pro really was. It took a few minutes to get used to the different sonic characteristics, but it's been quite pleasing, both for headphone listening, and vinyl to digital archival. It's a pity I didn't have it yet for the last local meet. Next time!- Packgrog

God, I love the Prime Sig. Gorgeous. My own setup is more humble and far more piecemeal (Scout Jr, damped motor pod, Michell clamp, Achromat, Audiomods Classic tonearm, Phoenix Engineering Falcon motor controller, DIY tachometer). I also recently added a new component for my analog-to-digital...- Packgrog

Of course I'm in! *IF* there is any interest, I can bring in my iBasso D14 and modded Denon AH-D2000. As previously, I'd mostly be there to just help out.- Packgrog

Philly meet Jan 29th 2017 Impressions thread
I even feel a little bad not bringing my gear to the last meet, but my puny setup would be more useful at a smaller meet. And I'd be curious to try the pad swapping between my Denons and the different Fostex TH-X00 cans. It'd be easier to spot differences without all the extra noise of so...- Packgrog

Review- VPI Nomad Turntable
Last update on the hum issue: A large part of it was my fault, and due to dimmable LED lights on old-fashioned dimmer switches. Switching off these switches killed off the remaining buzz. There *IS* still a hum from the motor or possibly a transformer in the deck, but that is the price paid for...- Packgrog

I should certainly be available to help with setup. I can probably also bring one or two Furman PST-8D filtering power supplies to help limit the negative power impact.- Packgrog

Review- VPI Nomad Turntable
Hum update: The RCA connectors need to be connected to SOMETHING. I plugged in a cheapo RCA-to-mini cable, and most (but not all) of the hum disappeared. I'm thinking of investing in some RCA caps to see if those can be used when I have the Player disconnected from anything else. I still need to...- Packgrog

Review- VPI Nomad Turntable
Well, thanks to a happy twist of fate, I am now the owner of a new VPI Player. Much more experimenting with the forthcoming as time allows. :D Some initial thoughts: First off, the stock felt(?) mat actually isn't bad. I decided to finally try the leather mat that I'd made years ago out...- Packgrog

Review- VPI Nomad Turntable
FWIW, I got to try the VPI Player (the replacement for the Nomad) a couple of days ago. It is a significant step up in overall quality. I even got to do some recordings this time, and really my only "gripe" was just that I don't like the 2m Red as much as my own moving coil cartridge that lists...- Packgrog

Post A Photograph Of Your Turntable
I still have an Apollo WT2SE double wall shelf (black, wood veneered shelves) that I'm no longer using. Worked GREAT in my apartment when mounted directly to a 2'x2' Home Depot birch plywood plank, which in turn was mounted to the wall studs. The cross beams were filled with sand, which did help...- Packgrog
