Well, B-stock are normally fully functional, but perhaps cosmetically imperfect items. So they wouldn't even be that. I only got one set from Adorama. The other set (also bad) came from another online store (at a higher price).

Yes, they finally got back to me and offered to replace it. About that time I discovered each pair of the the HE-560 rattled/buzzed.

What do you mean safe? If you remove the screws in the earcup after you pull the pad you can remove the driver (though it still has wires connecting it to the jacks) and basically all the parts.

At least for people in the US you don't have to ship them to China anymore. I shipped two pairs of rattling / buzzing HE-560's and a cable to HiFiman in New York state yesterday.

My HE-500's didn't have any audible issues out of the box. The build quality left something to be desired though. One of the threaded inserts in the ear cup pulled out of the plastic and I had to glue it back in not too long after getting them. I wasn't a huge fan of the SMC jacks either...

  I can confirm.  The UI is even more fluid and responsive with 1.20 than it was with 1.10 which itself was a significant improvement over 1.02.   This player keeps getting better and better.
