Meet the HD 598 Special Edition

Well I, for one, will not be one to "upgrade" to the newer HD 598s.  The original just match my car's interior too well...

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

I'm 99% sure the Sony Discman D-100 (manufactured somewhere around 86/87) uses a 9V negative tip power supply common with models from the D-5/D-50 through the D-150, D-250, D-555, D-9, D-40, and D-350.  A Sony AC-950W or AC-940A power supply will provide the proper voltage/power.  Also, a lot of...

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

Duncan, weren't you like THE DISCMAN GUY!?  Unless you're a different Duncan, your "review through the ages" and other posts were what spawned my collection.  Went from a single D-T4 in 2011 to about 40 different players now (including a couple D-303s, D-555, two D-211s, etc...).  Thanks for all...

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

I have a couple questions regarding Discman issues:   I have a Sony Discman D-515 that plays the disc fine, but there is no sound from the disc on either the headphone out or line out.  You can hear the "beep" from the player when it is paused or when you push the button.  Is there a place to...

Looking for a good pair of headphones to pair with my Hifi-Man EF2A amp

Hi.  Sorry I don't have any input on the phones you listed, but I am curious as to which phones you actually selected.  I am currently using a pair of Audio Technica ATH-A700 and the volume is too loud so I have to use an in-line volume control (running from an iPod classic LOD so no volume...

Quick intro and Question on Fiio E17 or SMSL SD-793II DAC/Amp

Unfortunately, no.  I still haven't bought it as I'm not sure how much I'd use it.  However, if someone found they were really pleased with the performance, I'd be inclined to pick one up.

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

I've had two d-555 units (one d-555 and one d-z555) that had similar issues reading the disc. I was able I fix the issue by cleaning and lubricating the drive screw for the laser assembly. You will need to take off the bottom plate at least. I can't recall if you need to disassemble any further...

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

Question about Sony Discman D-311 problem.  My D-311 was working fine, but it is no longer reading discs.  If I operate the unit with the lid open (by depressing the lid switch with a screwdriver) I can see that the CD is actually spinning backwards (counter-clockwise).  Any idea what would...

    Comfortable Durable Headphone Recommendation Request

I've had the Sennheiser HD-598s for a while and lug them around in a storage bag with no damage.  They sound great, but do leak a lot of sound, so you'll hear quite a lot around you and others can hear your music/games.  Strictly for the PC, I use a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M30 which are a...

Quick intro and Question on Fiio E17 or SMSL SD-793II DAC/Amp

New member to the Head-Fi site which seems to be a great place to read on all things portable audio.  I'm no audiophile by a long shot, but enjoy listening to a wide variety of music and found there are a plethora of ways to lighten the wallet while improving the listening experience.  I...

suggest me about headphone (low budget)

For low price, the Audio Technica ATH-M30s are decent enough and I find them pretty comfortable.  I have a set strictly devoted to the PC.  I got them for about $35USD but you can find them < $50USD pretty easily.  Otherwise, you could step up to the ATH-M50s for a little more.

    Best Headphones for Under $160

I would have to second (third, fourth?) the Grado SR80i phones.  I've got a set of Senn HD598s for classical/instrumental, and some ATH-A700 (closed phones) for work, but neither set can really compare with Grados for Rock.  I primarily use my SR80i phones for music on the order of Audioslave...

Do you (or anyone) know how the sound compares to the HD 598s? I'm looking for a closed back alternative to my 598s for use at work and these seem to get some pretty good reviews. Also, do they isolate pretty well: keep outside noises out and headphone music in? I listen to primarily...

    Good sounding cd player

It's good to see at least a couple folks still showing love for the old PCDPs!  I'm wondering if anyone else has had a chance to try the Sony MPD-A20u portable CD burner/DVD-ROM Drive?  I've found this to be a hidden gem (to my ears at least) sounding pretty nice.  I've compared it to some of my...

Will the SMSL SD-793II work with higher impedence headphones ?

Hi.  Did you end up getting this unit?  I'm looking at these on Ebay and wondering if it is a good deal.  I've got some 32-100 Ohm headphones, so nothing too hard to drive.

I have a pair of these and love them as well. I was also highly annoyed by the complete lack of any cable terminated in a 3.5mm connection. What I ended up doing is purchasing a cable with a 2.5mm plug on one end and a 3.5mm plug on the other. I use a bench grinder to shave down the insulation...

Any PCDP's good with scratched discs?

I've found most of the vintage players I have are not good at playing scratched discs.  I have a few old ones (D-250, D-5, etc.) that seem to have worse issues with scratched discs.  The "D-EJ" era and newer players do pretty well at playing scratched discs, but you do take a hit in sound...

Kaosun's Vintage CD Player Service Bulletin

Hi.  I have a Sony Discman D-9 manufacture date Sept 1989 that is having issues with the headphone output.  The right channel of the headphone output is quiet/almost silent.  The line out is fine for both channels.  I am assuming it is most likely due to the output capacitors for the headphone...
