What you noticed is a fact indeed!   Pleather pads makes better seal, so fuller sound and more bass! Velour breaths better, so you kinda get a less detailed sound, but goes much better with this bass mod when it comes to 439.   Now the 449 may take either plether or velour. But I think...

Their replacement is HD-471. The letter g or i goes to the cable it uses: So HD-471g for android, HD-471i for i-phones.    This is basicaly a HD-449 as far as characteristics go. Perhaps you can mod them as well with the same mod.   The same may be true for HD-439 wich is replaced by HD-461...

Too difficult to do after modding them, sorry. I already been careless a couple of times, thankfully I fixed the damage (cut a wire(!), broken a plastic little tooth by removing/inserting pads all the time). As I said before, my recommendations are for 439 and 449 (don't own other models)...
