Depends on the cable. Some have 4 wires some have three (1 wire for both grounds). In the end you need 4 wires (2 coming off each driver) but depending on the way the headphone is made the actual wire you see may have 4 or 3. Usually 4 in my experience though.

I use them all the time to pick up extra parts and stuff. Be warned that youre not going to find the highest quality volume pots there, but everything else should be relatively good, you just have to search through for an opamp that works for you. They have some nice stripboard to work with that...

Id be in for one of these too, if theres one available.

With $1000 CDN ($870 american or so), i would stalk ebay for a Stax SRM-1/MK-2+Lambda pro combo (probably $650-700 american) and then get a zhaolu dac for a source. Hey, what do you know, its what i have . You could then just use the digital out of your computer, or get one of the soundcards...
