The subjective element in evaluating hardware, or: Mindful hearing versus mindless hearing.

For sure, it won't change anybody automatically. It might spur a few people to look further into it themselves, however, which is about as much as you can do, really :) I disagree with the assertion that reading a book won't help, provided it's an effective book, and the person has the right...

    Headphone Burn-in

Quote:   To be fair, the psychological aspect of burn in can be very important. I've certainly had headphones and speakers that didn't sound all that great to me at first, but I have grown to enjoy over time. Whether this is the case of my brain learning to filter out the flaws...

The subjective element in evaluating hardware, or: Mindful hearing versus mindless hearing.

I don't have much to add, but I just felt I'd bump it as it deserves further discussion. I certainly agree that people focus too much on expecting the physical side of audio to do everything for them.

    Celtic Folk Metal

Try Pagan Reign, an awesome melodic folk metal band from Russia. They've been split up for a few years, but all of their albums are good. The albums Tverd and Ancient Warriors are probably a good place to start.

Hardcore - Crust, Powerviolence, Grind, Anarcho etc. all welcome

Quote: Yeah, I consider Napalm Death to be so obvious that it didn't need to be mentioned ! That being said the three albums from their straight grind era are all awesome: Scum From Enslavement to Obliteration Peel Sessions   Their later stuff is more of a mix of death/grind, much...

Another grind band worth listening to is Gronibard. Their later albums get progressively more silly, but their self titled debut is ridiculously good.

Here' s a few grind bands. I'm not sure if you're interested in goregrind but because it is what I am most familiar with, I listed a few. Early carcass/napalm death style grind: Insect Warfare Captain Cleanoff Super Fun Happy Slide The Kill     Goregrind: Gruesome Stuff...

Head-Fi Lo-Fi: basics & the joy of music

My worst system is my car stereo. All of the speakers are crackling, the back two I had to unhook completely they had gotten so bad. They sound like crap, and only electronic music is acceptable to listen to. But I still turn it on every time I get in my car, because I love music.

USB DAC on windows 7 ?

HotUSB1 and Windows 7 32bit RTM works, but volume is far too high.Need to set master volume down to 5% or less to get usable volume, and this results in much less control over the volume. Seems to be a bug in Windows 7 usb audio driver, as it is a common problem with usb audio devices.
