    Grado GH-1 Discussion

I don't think the maple itself is changing color, I think it's the finish that changes colors.  I overhauled my Polk SDA speakers and re-did the veneer in maple, then I used tung oil to finish it.  The tung oil has turned a beautiful honey amber color.  But that's the oil, not the wood.

I actually had a problem with mine - one of the drivers caught a buzz, so to speak.  Sent them back to Grado and they fixed them under warranty.  Just got them back today and they are back to their glorious self again!  I also replaced the Ortofon 2M Black on my VPI Prime with a Grado Statement...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

I wouldn't sell those G cushions.  I've been pretty vocal about preferring the L cushions to the G cushions in the majority of cases.  A while back, I wrote that I prefer the L cushions about 80% of the time, with the G cushions getting the nod only about 20% of the time.  I still stand by that...

Very true.  If they're going to sell something and label it as a limited edition, it's only fair to tell people just how limited they are.

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

For me the GH-1 leaves me without a bass itch to scratch.  It's not head-thumping bass, but head-thumping bass is not natural sounding.  To me the GH-1 is very neutral.  It doesn't emphasize any portion of it's frequency range over another, there is a wonderful balance across highs, mids, and...

Nice setup I had.  I miss that room....   I had the second version that came out, resolved all the issues the first generation had.  It's a great table, but the Scout Jr. kind of eliminated the point of it.  A Traveler is a Traveler, but for $100 more you could get a Scout Jr., which has a...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

Hah!  Glad you like it.   My wife and I just moved to Florida after selling our house that we owned for almost 20 years.  In the house I had a dedicated 2-channel room with my SDA's, acoustic treatments, etc.  It was good fun down there:   Then I had my headphone setup in my office...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

I love vintage Polks.  I've owned them in one form or another since the 80's.  I have a pair of hot-rodded SDA-CRS+'s, but my apartment doesn't really have space for them to do their thing, so I'm just using a pair of old Monitor 5's.  I'm very active on their forums, and there are a slew of...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

I agree.  The complication here is that I use my system for both loudspeaker and headphone listening.  The new 299D makes that really simple.  The 2M Black sounds just great with the loudspeakers, it's only through the Grados that I'm noticing any issues.  The 2M Black is a bit brighter than the...

Congrats, that may be one of the last pair, period.  Not just in Canada.  I really can't see you not loving these.

Ditto that.  I've just upgraded my turntable and I'm running an Ortofon 2M Black.  My previous table was running a Grado Sonata.  I have noticed a big improvement in many ways, but one thing I have noticed is that I've lost a bit of synergy with the GH-1.  Not much, not saying they don't sound...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

Ok, we have some common ground finally!  That is spot on.  The bass from the GH-1's certainly is not overpowering in any way.  But it has a refined presence unlike I've heard in any other Grado.  Quality, not quantity.  Precisely.

I do agree that they have a much firmer bass presence without being overstated.  And agree that I like their sound better than the LCD-3.  In fact, when I got my new amp I liked my 325i's better than the LCD-3.  So I sold the LCD-3 and got one of the few pairs of GH-1 that were still out there...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

Lots of listening lately, now that I've got the Prime dialed in.  Very different sound coming from the Ortofon than my previous Grado Sonata cart.  Naturally the Grado cart and the GH-1 played really nicely together.  I've encountered one or two recordings, and to be honest I've lost track of...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

I've been spending a good amount of time with these lately, and I am really enjoying them.  I've been swapping cushions back and forth, and I'm pleased to say that I will not be putting my G cushions up for sale.  I'm at about 80/20 L cushion vs. G cushion, and it's entirely dependent on the...

Again, not afraid to be the contrarian here. I'd think his brother would be quite thrilled getting a box with just some plain old GH-1's, Grado did intend for these to listen to these with L pads after all. I don't think there is a need to go pushing G cushions on everyone who's interested in...

    Grado GH-1 Discussion

Not ashamed to be the contrarian here, but coming from a pair of 325is, I'm pretty used to the L-cushion.  They've never really bothered me.  Personally, I prefer the sound of my GH-1's with the stock L's over the G's.  The increased headspace is nice for some recordings, but by and large I...

Do headphone amps without volume controls exist?

Wow, how did this thread get woken up?  Honestly, I gave up on solving this problem.  I just left my headphones separate from the loudspeakers.  Thanks for the advice!

Sgt Pepper in Mono or Stereo? Your preference...

The mono remastered on vinyl are absolutely fantastic. They stand right up to the vintage mono pressings that I have. The vinyl reissues were far better in mono than they were in stereo. However, the recent Red and Blue album vinyl releases in stereo were pure analog and also sound amazing. Too...

Why no love for headroom amps?

Not sure I agree, I think the dac sounds excellent.  I ran a Squeezebox Touch through the triple stack and listened with LCD-3's, and I was just blown away over and over again.  I never had any issues with that dac's sound whatsoever.   The triple stack was in my office, and then I also have a...

Why no love for headroom amps?

Cheers man.  I'm fairly confident that one day I'll regret this sale, but we're going to be selling our house soon, and downsizing substantially.  Just don't think I'll be needing a separate headphone rig any more.  And if I do, it won't be for quite a while so I'd rather just do a pretty big...
