sony nw-hd1, mp3 upgrade?
No, Sony Japan's website says it began on November 30, and lasts until May 31. Please get your facts straight - non-Japanese websites often get their info wrong. http://www.sony.jp/support/p-audio/c..._nw-hd1_2.html As an example, the webmaster of Vaioethics.com sent his HD1 to Sony on...- leon

sony nw-hd1, mp3 upgrade?
Kane, This is Japan-only for now. The way they do this is to have delivery people pick up your player, and return it about a week later, it's not an operation the owner can do. I wonder if they might have difficulty doing this outside Japan? The December 24 date is for the Vaio Pocket...- leon

MZ-E10 or MZ-E900?
The E10 has many options that you can set to your liking, such as disc access (quick mode, power save, etc) and backlight. The E900's got none of those. The E900 doesn't have group mode. I think the remote's not as easy to use as the E10's. The E900 doesn't have the 6-band EQ or any surround...- leon

With Macworld a month away, iPod flash rumors fly
I'm already using a player that's the same diameter as the mini's scroll wheel. Trust me, you're going to like that size, that's the real embodiment of being unobstrusive. Mine's got no display. MP3 players are usually all about extra information, so when you buy something without that it's...- leon

Sharp MD-MT888 or MD-MT770
Now now! I've been wondering what it'll take for D-EJ915 to say that I'm right!!!! That's a cause for celebration I think the MT770/888's user interface is very nice - great experience to have. Sharp's also got the joystick exactly right, if you think joysticks suck, just wait till...- leon

Sony NW-HD3
In case this hasn't already been posted, AV Watch posted a brief review with some very nice shots of the display in action. http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...203/dev095.htm Like this - the bass/treble adjustment for MP3 playback:- leon

holding off for new models?
I think there's always going to be new products coming out, so if you're always waiting for better value for money, you're just gonna end up hurting yourself (figuratively speaking). Buy something you genuinely like - meaning you're not going to like it less when you see it 40% off as a refurb -...- leon

at what bit rate/sample rate do you encode?
Music: preset standard in LAME 3.95 or .96 . If AAC then either 128 or 190kbps. I don't use ALAC because for much of my music the bitrate doesn't differ very much from straight wav/aiff. So I'd use wav/aiff for storage and perhaps 256/320 for highest quality on the iPod. Internet radio: abr...- leon

Sony NW-HD3
The HD3 is "open-price" in Japan - it doesn't really have an MSRP. The 42,000 is just an "estimate" given by Sony - stores can definitely sell for less (or more) afaik. Filipe, The HD3's battery can be charged via USB. Even if Sony offers to update the HD1/HD2, this feature will not be...- leon

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...1130/sony1.htm Japanese release December 10. The HD3 supports MP3 playback. However, VPT acoustic engine & the 6-band EQ will not function during MP3 playback. Instead, you will get an 8-step bass/treble control ("digital sound preset"), like on the...- leon

iPod Face-Plates
I took apart my 3G iPod. It's basically not a "faceplate" but an entire upper cabinet that has to be pried open from the bottom cabinet (you can see details of this on the web). Several of the iPod's parts (LCD, wheel) are attached to this upper cabinet, and as far as I can recall, they don't...- leon

Radio 'Soundstage'. Don't you love it?
I can perceive an interesting "timber" even on stations that don't seem compressed at all by comparison (e.g. the NPR stations). Listening to an CD copy just isn't the same.- leon

Samsung YP-55 (Yepp 256MB) Review
Cool review! The main thing that stopped me from buying Samsung flash players is that you have to use their software to transfer music (i.e. not as a mass storage device). Probably not a real disadvantage, but there are so many players out there that you can drag&drop to on the desktop/finder.- leon

blessingx, In my case I don't give credit to that functionality because I need more than just a viewer. The 4k limit on text notes also totally prevents me from using it as a serious text reader. My biggest gripe with PDAs is that they complicate really simple things. With all the $ I've...- leon

Need some help selecting a MP3 player
I've got the iPod mini, and I love its user interface - as a Mac user you won't be disappointed. The main consideration is battery life: the 8-hour will seem shorter than 8, because the hard drive often has to be turned on to skip tracks. The Rio Carbon is rated for 20 hours' on paper: even if...- leon

PC Laptop with decent Sound Card?
Perhaps the Sony Vaio A. The optional AV Dock has an S-Master digital amp built in. The connection between the laptop and this dock is digital (S/PDIF). Speaker cables are used instead of the usual miniplug (1/8"). (the cheaper A's don't have the dock, and if you configure everything from...- leon

Is there any point to minidisc?
Redshifter, Atrac Type R is the version that came after version 4.5 As a long time MD user, I think it's much easier to record from an external source to MD than to any MP3 player currently available. MD portables are made so you can monitor the incoming sound, adjust recording level so...- leon
