To answer your question I still am looking as i like to do a lot of research, but i may just go with the M-Audio Studiophile q40 with the Beyer dt 770 pads and a Fiio e7 for a more portable solution.

If you can still find them, I would try the Sony XB40EX or its newer companion the XB41EX. Both produce bass like none other that I have ever heard.   They give you the ability to feel your bass and that is a basshead's heaven.

I wonder if there will be similar products for android phones in the future... and possibly cheaper too

I think I am addicted to Head-Fi.  I found myself in Ross yesterday and I was looking at jeans but i saw some headphones from Solo Audio and my first reaction was to look them up on Head-Fi to see if they are any good.  I do this everywhere I go if I see headphones...    Am I hopelessly...

so a Fiio e11/17 could possibly do the job while i figure out a better source than my HTC Thunderbolt?

or maybe perhaps a wonderful soundstage and decent bass, not boom, can be achieved?

Thanks guys for your help.  About those Sennheieser IE8's, is the low end very pronounced or is it a more textured kind of bass?   And about the DT990, I believe it is an open can, so can the bass be pronounced and deep along with its sub bass while having that wide open soundstage?  ...

I have been tirelessly searching for head phones that could fulfill my two desires concrete earthquake bass and a wide open soundstage to have an enveloping, 3d like feel.   But, it seems as if i can have either one or the other?  Perhaps there is a way to compromise some and fulfill both...

The soundstage on the DT770 sounds wonderful along with the bass. Can the soundstage and imaging be increased with proper amplification and use of a DAC?

the DT770 seems to be a good all-rounder but is there a more portable equivalent?

i know this is late but thank you for all of your suggestions.  I recently have been struck by the Beyerdynamics DT770 pro and it seems to be the perfect headphone to get.   but i am looking for a more portable solution so perhaps some one can suggest that?
