Best Amp made by Stax for Omega II
Yeah I took a look at the circuit and realized it would require a total rebuild. Oh well, I will have to find something else to scratch my current DIY itch.- johnmatrix

The Stax thread (New)
I spent 6 weeks looking for a ground loop in my amp that ended up being a broken connector in my O2mkI. I want to find the engineer that came up with that "strain relief" and strangle him. However, everything else seems to be top notch in the O2 and now that I know about that problem I can fix...- johnmatrix

Best Amp made by Stax for Omega II
For those of you getting ready to build the KGSS, you may want to look at the 2sc3676. It has twice the current capacity of the 2sc3675 (but twice the capacitance) so you may be able to run the KGSS at higher voltages. I looking into this now to see what else needs to be changed in the PS and...- johnmatrix

Best Amp made by Stax for Omega II
Hey guys, I uploaded the BOM for the KGSS. Below is the orginal BOM. Some of the parts aren't available anymore but it includes both power supplies. 2shared - download kgss_parts.xls Additionally, here is the BOM I used. Most of the parts should be available, except for the 2sk which...- johnmatrix

KGSS sonic characteristics
The Koss 950 is a good headphone made better by the KGSS, but it does not play in the same league as the O2. The O2 simply has better bass, detail, and tonality and they are good for anything you throw at them. When you hear the them for the first time the bass will shock you; it was...- johnmatrix

Kinsale, I would suggest upgrading your amp or source. The O2mk1 are brutally revealing and will let you know if there are any weakness. Likewise, the Sr-x will still scale with the new equipment. What's your budget?- johnmatrix

The Stax thread (New)
Having owned the Sr-XmkIII and now the o2mk1, the o2 is the like a Sr-x mkIII with none of its flaws. The o2s have bass, soundstage while retaining the toe tapping fun of the Sr-x. I almost think the stax designers went back to the vault and ignored the sound from the lambda series. If you don't...- johnmatrix

the stax SR-Xs & other vintage staxs questions
i would suggest simply saving for the omega2mk1 or buy a better source. You'll get more bang for your buck that way. I started with the Sr-Xmk3 and I view the omega 2mk1 as an Sr-X mk3 with none of its flaws. The O1 has a driver defect which causes them to fail so that may not be the best use of...- johnmatrix

Electrostats : How to start?
I fell in love with estats when I heard the HE60 at meet and over the years have proceeded to move up the chain. The closest I have come to owning a dynamic rig was the K340. I also enjoy all types of music and find estats handle all music equally well. I would recommend the Sr-X mk III. If...- johnmatrix

audio quality....DVD vs. BlueRay?
In my opinion, the audio improved just as much as the video on blu-ray vs dvd. So blu-ray is worth it from an audio standpoint.- johnmatrix

Zapfilter 2 Questions
Well, I figured out the problem. The diagram on the lc audio page was wrong. The purple and black + red and yellow should be twisted together for 115V operation. As far as the zapfilter, the sound is much cleaner and balanced, a nice improvement.- johnmatrix

Zapfilter 2 Questions
I recently bought a zapfilter mk2 for my denon and I am having trouble with the power supply. I went online to look at the connection diagram and it was useless. The wire colors did not match the transformer I have. So I was wondering if someone had recently installed a zapfilter mk2 and...- johnmatrix

Grounding Issues
Well I finally fixed the issue and it turns out it has nothing to do with grounding. Once I had decided on the AC being the problem I switched outlets and heard less noise. However, I noticed when I approached my room's lamp the noise got louder. My guess the phones were acting as an antennae...- johnmatrix

Grounding Issues
I confirmed the problem by taking the amp to another person's house and there was no noise present in the system. I then measured the difference between earth ground and AC neutral and found 110mV difference between the two. Is this normal or out of whack?- johnmatrix

Grounding Issues
I tested the resistance to ground again between all the grounds in my amp and the case. The resistances were the same for all of them (20 ohms). So it appears all of the grounds are only connected to the amp in one place. The ground noise does get louder when I turn on the light in my room and...- johnmatrix

Grounding Issues
Pars, That is a very useful test you suggested. I tested the ground to case resistance for the input jacks, pot, output stage, power supply and they all read the same resistance. Also, there was 0 voltage reading between all of them when the amp is running. I tried upping the capacitance...- johnmatrix

Grounding Issues
I have the amp cased and ready to go except for the grounding issue. I did some investigation and found that when I turn off my room light and the receiver on the opposite side of the wall the noise gets quieter. Also, if I switch outlets the noise also decreases and almost disappears. I am...- johnmatrix
