I think there are humans who can hear 21 kHz, but there are very, very few of them. If I was in your position, I would suspect that what I'm hearing is a harmonic (a result of non-linear distortion that any tweeter exhibits because nothing is precisely perfect).

Eh, I like to know I've given it the best chance I could. Having equipment that is objectively audibly transparent (i. e. impossible to be "heard" by any human) means I never have to worry about it ever again. But yes, from my experience so far, the acoustic system / headphones is where it's at...
