Cavalli Compact Tube Hybrid (CTH) Tube & Tweak thread.

I know this probably belongs on the for-sale forum, but it's been so long I thought I'd post here where folks might remember what this is (mod's willing) -- the Spruce Canyon web site is gone...   I have a CTH kit from Spruce Canyon Labs I never built (got a new job just after it arrived and...

    Amp for HD650's

The Bottlehead S.E.X. amp is also a great contender (not to take anything away from any of the other suggestions).

    Gamma-2 (γ2) DAC Thread

Some of the Thinkpad docks have coax SPDIF out ports. Good luck with USB -- I had a heck of a time with it when I was on Thinkpads with USB -- lots of stuttering and drops. With luck the more sophisticated reclocking, etc., on the y2 will work much better for you when connected to the TP via USB.

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

I'll let others respond to the audio characteristics of short runs of different purities of copper, etc. To me, the advantages of decent-quality teflon-coated wire are: * Good build quality of the wire that makes it consistent and reliable and easy to work with * Teflon doesn't shrink back...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Hope it's OK to post here that I have my unbuilt and basically unopened Beezar SSMH kit for sale in the amps-for-sale forum. (I've built 2 and am buried with work so don't have time in the forseeable future to build this one.) I made some bravado statement there about "highest offer" by 9...

Best DIY Tube amp for Price to performance?

Just to add to the other fine amps in this thread, the Bottlehead Single-Ended Experimenter's amp is also a fine choice: Single Ended eXperimenter's Kit It's also upgradable in several ways, step by step.

    PCMCIA Sound card Suggestions!

Another approach might be a PCMCIA firewire card -> one of the firewire sound "cards" folks like so much. Just a thought. I have such a card if you want to pursue that approach...

    Starving Student Looking For Help

If you're just a little persistent and indeed if you look locally you shouldn't have too much trouble finding 19J6 tubes, which are the only practical choice for the SSMH amp. Beezar.com has a kit that comes with tubes, if you're OK working with a PCB rather than point-to-point.

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

Tomb, thanks a lot for the details. I also really appreciate them. I'd hope to impose further and second LLama16's question: will connecting the star ground to true earth have an effect on the floating ground?

Should I get a headphone amp?

bba1973: protect your wallet. Don't buy an amp. You will only enjoy your music more and then start thinking about converting your rips to lossless and getting a decent DAC. Then it's upgrading your headphones. One step leads to another. You may even take up a musical instrument yourself and then...

    Are HeadRoom amps any good?

I have and love their Ultra Micro DAC. Design, versatility, and sound are all super. I have purchased and kept, purchased and returned, and returned an item for warranty repair, etc., and they are delightful to deal with in each of these cases. Headroom gear if off-the-shelf loveliness. A lot...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

I think Canjam was the wrong time for me to post a technical question last weekend, so apologies for trying again (this time more simply): Is there any reason I should not connect the MMSH star ground, and/or my MMSH chassis, via a dedicated wire, to the third (grounding) pin in an outlet...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

I've recently switched jobs and now work for a company that writes software for cell phones and related devices. This means I'm surrounded by devices that emit RF. The two MSSH amps I tried in that environment (one point-to-point, the other a PCB prototype) were pretty unlistenable with...

Huge problem...iTunes library all screwed up

LaCie drives use good hw, are well made, and have fast interfaces for Macs. There's a slight price premium, but for backup, you don't really want to mess around.
