I have the Audioengine a2 speakers. Don´t spect any bass similar to your Altec-Lansing 6,5´´ subwoofer´s. Other frequencies runs quite well !- nagual

Replacement for ESI Juli@ (external only)
I´ve never heard to Juli@, unfortunatly, but if you want to avoid onboard noise, go USB. I´ve bought a cheap SABRE 24/96 DAC_DigiT, something about US$40,and I´m happy with it. Good luck !- nagual

better speaker needed
Don´t forget to mute everything, but your speakers, and set 100% level in Sound/ Control Panel. It will not harm your audio, at least.- nagual

$2 Realtek Audio Chip = $2000 DAC!
Afaik, what matters in onboard audio is the implementation, more than the chip itself, since the HDaudio standard was made to overcome human hearing. So, in motherboards with shielded sound features there must be no difference in perceived sound quality from dedicated audio, even the top ones.- nagual
