HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

I've had an (unfounded) thought that perhaps, current-out (i.e. very high output impedance, current source) amps could increase isolation in open-back isodynamic headphones by "stabilising" the membrane, counteracting EMF created by external sound on the membrane. It's unfounded and I can't...

HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Does anybody own at once a good voltage-out amp and a current-out amp? I'm wondering about possible differences in external noise isolation between these kinds of amps.

    The 3D Printer Thread! :D

Wow, just when I think that it's entirely doable to 3d print new, larger cups for Fostex, I read about Alpha Dogs. When I think that I could actually do that as well without much trouble - I see that thread. Fascinating!   Sadly I don't have enough properly free time to dive into it yet, but...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

jgray91, bluemonkeyflyer,   I've been and still using beyer gels on a DBV-like mod without much problem. I don't really recall precisely how they sounded initially, before the first adjustments, but now their sound doesn't produce any fatigue. Granted, I do listen with stereo convolution...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Indeed, seems that wool-type materials have significantly better absorption than foam materials. So it's likely preferrable to use fiber instead of foam as cup filler. Though still, impedance matching is present, so a boundary layer of foam (e.g. in cup wells) would be beneficial. That could...

Midrange is doable with BMF's mods entirely, these seem to address the 11k resonance problem. Or it could be the quirk of measurement actually - all the RMAA measurements seem to be somewhat too flat after 10 kHz.. I think that could be done in less destructive way. But I'm not going into the...

Here's FR of an mod of one Russian guy. White is unpressed earpads, green - pressed. Notable is flat FR above 10 kHz. The mod is very extensive. He picks the drivers, removes stock paper, saws through metal plates, mades wooden earcups no less than 10mm thick, and does custom damping, cup...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Where have the DBV#3 measurements went to? Don't see them anymore... It seems that the main component of modding is damping the driver, that's what seems to provide flat responce. To get flat responce above 10kHz one would have to get inside the driver and damp from there, I suppose.

Have you pinched holes through transpore as well? (They shouldn't work the other way anyways) Try covering them, with transpore for example.   Holes seem to provide a HUGE boost of deep bass. Mine have +25dB at 20Hz, I can't say it sounds muffled, it's more like I'm sitting inside a huge...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

Made lips for Beyer gel earpads out of pleather, as I grew tired of tape attachment: takes a lot of tape, some time, not very repeatable - every time I reinstalled the pads, I got them placed differently, a bit messy, and is too tight - not possible to make a lot of space under the pad that way...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Quote: From what I understand, you just have to substitute the program's jar file with beta jar on Mac. Don't think it actually has any fatal bugs, what we're interested in is anyways not OS-related, just internal calculations.   By the way, do you use your headphones with crossfeed...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Quote: It's Windows version, V5.01 beta 10, there is also beta for lin/mac, but they're completely untested, as author says.   Have you properly level-matched Magni and Dacmini during your test? Safe margin for level matching is only 0.1dB. I'm personally though more inclined for a...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

REW has just been updated with a new version, with improvements on CSD generation. I've tried it, and had a relatively successful result, by setting plot time to 6 ms, time window to 6 ms, and rise time to 0.1 ms. Although these parameters should have been in previous versions as well, as some...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

There's a bit on REW's CSD plots I don't get. They all show decay above 100ms, even for the fastest mods. However, measurements done by other systems, as in purrin's measurements, have decay under 1ms on some phones which are supposedly similar. Is there something incorrect with REW's...

Equalizing headphones: What equipment do I need?

Proper application of HRTF has these "missing 6 dB", as HRTF for pair of speakers includes two paths to each ear - from one speaker and from another. The ear-side speaker is not changed much, the other-side speaker is delayed and attenuated above 1kHz, so below 1kHz you essentially get +6dB.  ...

Equalizing headphones: What equipment do I need?

Quote: There will be no confusion as there is just no cues from headphones. What you will get is quite loudspeaker-like sound. Granted, the pinna changes the sound and is directional, but as apparently binaural recordings are generally reproduced quite correctly, its contribution is rather...

How far can EQ really go towards truly equalizing headphones?

I probably have already balanced it well enough just by eye - it was a simple slope to compensate, but it irks me to use 4 plugins instead of one. Seems to tax CPU a bit, my computer is old.

How far can EQ really go towards truly equalizing headphones?

Now I do need help from gurus of EQ :)   On the IRCAM's site's downloads page, there's a system's impulse responce file presented. I have imported it into REW to make an filter to correct out the responce. I've successfully exported filter responce and applied it into fb2k using convolver...

Headphone testing: To Pinna or Not to Pinna (that is the question)

Just try to draw a couple graphs and you'll see it's not universally applicable. If a headphone has responce that sound identical to a flat speaker for a head, that only means its transfer function is identical to head's HRTF. See: Let's assume that a DF frequency responce for head 1 has a...
