M50 sound signature is amazing for hip hop and rap and Amazon reviews show 5 star reviews of the M50 are almost twice as frequent as the UE6000. May more fun sounding for these genres than anything I've heard out of HD598, DT880, PX100-II, or Audioengine A5s.

I shortened the cable on my straight M50 to 120cm. I just desoldered it from the PCB, cut it, then soldered it back on. Simplest project ever and now I can use them on the bus etc. It probably reduces the capacitance of the common ground which is a bonus but that wasn't really the goal.

I think amplification needs to be taken into account here. To get good "deep bass" out of higher end cans like DT880 of HD 650 you really need a decent amplifier.

Ok, I have had mine for almost a year and I am now very happy with them. Initially they were pretty heavy on my head and kind of uncomfortable but they fit well now. They are nicer than my DT880 with most of my music when both are unamped.

Are the 12AU7 like these the cheapest tubes to use? What is the likely hood that within a year one of the tubes will fail? Would it be worth it to get 3 or 4 as spares since the tubes are $5 each and shipping is $8 no matter how many I get?

How did you measure the SPL of the cans was what I think he meant.

I think the M50 will sound much nicer to most people for pop music (rock, R&B, rap, metal, electronic) while the AD700 have a low bass open can presentation that will sound very good with classical and instrumental music. People think both are great so it's a hard decision.
