to be used as a headphone amp? discussion commence

Nothing to do for a couple of weeks, so I figure I might try to build an amp. Aside from being able to solder, I'm a complete novice to electronics, so I'm looking to spend as little as possible because I'm not expecting it to actually work. From what I can gather good choices are Beta 22...

Has anyone cosmetically modded their headphones, whether out of need or just for fun? No pics, but my HD555's are currently sporting gaffer tape wrapped around the classic HD555 cracks + I'm looking for ideas to make a botched job look slightly more neatly botched
