    Shure SRH440 Impression

I keep coming back to the OG SRH440. With some light EQ they have a immersive thickness that's addictive.

The main issue is Beyerdynamics unit variation is known to be pretty high. It could work with individual measurements.

    AKG K361/K371

My theory is that it's not that the upper mids are too hot, its that the mid-bass is recessed. Try cutting 250Hz on the HD6XX and you will hear something similar.

Wanna hear a 8kHz peak try Beyer DT990. K371 treble is smooth as a baby's bottom by comparison.

    AKG K361/K371

Tried the updated K361 in a store, the headband looked visually redesigned and the clicks were very tactile. I haven't heard of a updated K371 yet. I got rid of mine and keeping an eye on the upcoming JBL Tune 710.

    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

More like a steal. People pay 3-5 times the price for other headphones with that feature.

    A moderate EQ strategy

3kHz is a frequency where the ear is very sensitive to change, cutting it will accentuate all frequencies around it. It would also sound similar to boost at 250Hz, try both and see which sounds best to you. I use constant Q because its accurate enough for non-individual measurements and...

10kHz dips not showing up in IEM measurements is expected because they bypass the pinna.

That's why I'm impressed by AKG K371. We will see if more headphones get released that compete in bass extension and low distortion.

    A moderate EQ strategy

Some headphone have a lot off bass roll-off. If you were to use that much gain to fully match harman in the sub-bass region, you'd have to listen for distortion, and back off when it starts sounding detrimental. Or use better cans that don't roll off or distort too much.

Shure SRH440 frankenstein'd/fixed with Sony MDR 7506 headband.

Awesome looking mod. The Sony MDR7506 headband is well built and comfortable. Nice to see it can be modded on to the SRH440.

    A moderate EQ strategy

Adding harmonic distortion is an issue. REW is a pretty good tool for the task of headphone EQ overall because it doesn't correct for bass roll offs by default so you don't get extra bass distortion unless you raise those bands manually.

    A moderate EQ strategy

Headphones with questionable frequency responce get hyped up way too often. EQ might improve them but they should be weeded out. Same with IEMs, not all are equal in terms of how they handle varying insertion depths and reliable seal. My guide deals with getting you started on trying out...

    A moderate EQ strategy

For sure. Or they tried it without being aware of it's limitations and ended up dismissing EQ altogether cause they werent happy with the sound. That's why I wanted to address some of the common ones because it does raise interesting questions.

    A moderate EQ strategy

To provide concrete evidence on why EQ-ing above 2kHz is questionable take a look a this graph, from Tyll Hertsens: You can see that the effects of varying positioning largely affect frequencies above 2Khz. This leads to the conclusion is that there are two rational solutions for this type of...

    A moderate EQ strategy

For the sake of addressing frequency response differences due to personal positioning, I have spent some time figuring out manual EQ based on available averaged measurements, such as those by oratory1990. The strategies detailed below avoid unwanted harshness or dullness. I will explain how...

Sony budget earphone discussion thread (MH750, MH755, MH1C, EX300, etc)

Sony MH750 is one of those few IEMs that sounds good without EQ. And I've EQ'd many IEMs and headphones.

    AKG K361/K371

There are a number of popular audiophile headphones that have pretty severe peaks. Case in point: Sennheiser HD800. For a small group of listeners this will be a desirable trait for detail and imaging. Make no mistake K371 has a relatively smooth treble.
