Formula 1-fi (Read the First Post!)

I'd like to think that di Resta is better than these rookie mistakes, but it sure looks bad.  After he spun out at Korea, I recalled the pre-race tv commentary (Sky or BBC) where it was asserted that the Silverstone fiasco led to significant changes in the tyre behavior, that caused some...

    Top 100 Rock Albums (AVRev.com)

Ouch. Phil farking Collins? It's interesting to see that Paul's Boutique only got a so-so production score. I thought the Dust Brothers were the bees' knees in production (sampling) techniques. Also notable is that U2's Zooropa made the list but Achtung Baby didn't. Maybe add that and...

Vanilla Fudge - Ticket To Ride I mentioned this waaay back and I think it's still true.

    Voxtrot (indie rock fans)

I've only heard Four Long Days. It's one of those perfect pop songs.

    Covers better than the originals...

Reptilia - The Strokes (covered by Howie Beck) I think that the production on Room On Fire hurt some of the songs. I didn't realize how awesome this song is when you strip it down. It's sort of the same mood as set on Gary Jules Mad World cover.

    American can't make cars?

Jeremy Clarkson and friends mentioned the Volvo c30 almost 2 weeks ago, and I think it's dead sexy. Volvo's c30 designer blog mentions that it was designed by a good Canadian kid, so I think that counts as a (North) American design success! I was surprised to see it at the dealer's lot...

    American can't make cars?

It's been noted here that European cars are more complicated and less reliable than before. Still, I wouldn't mind one of the Volvo c30s - even if it's impossible to rewire for aftermarket stereos, or difficult to repair. It looks pretty cool, especially at the back - quite the profile, and...

    American can't make cars?

I liked the old Mazda 5. It didn't have the best refinement, but it looked good. The last Proteges were fun, but the new Mazda 3 drives like a Taurus, and I can't quite get into the 3 Sport looks.

Do I need an amp for Grado Sr125's?

I don't believe you need an amp for these. I had a pair of the same Grados for ages and listened mostly out of a portable cd player. The sound was big, and the bass was miles better than anything else out of similar devices. I did get a lot of kicks out of the old Creek OBH-11 amp. When used...

    Topgear back!

Episode 3 played out like a feature film with all the human condition-ness of it. Really well done. Clarkson's window display was priceless, too. Best quote this season: Episode 2 Jeremy to Hugh Grant on why Jamie Oliver is placed lower on the lap board when both share the same time. "I...

    American can't make cars?

As a little footnote here. I notice that car makers can't seem to go wrong by styling their headlamps in an upswept-to-the-edge parallelogramish shape. I see it everywhere, and I'm not getting tired of it. Add some inspired fender design and some Japanese powertrain, and I'm all over it.

    American can't make cars?

To give Americans their props though, I really like the look of some of their bigger small offerings, such as the Chevy Cobalt SS. The Dodge SRT-4 that was available in non-existant numbers for a few days 2 summers ago also looked good - but not in that hideous blue sedan version shown...

    American can't make cars?

To a lesser degree, the same applies to the Ford Focus. Here's a stumper though. Why doesn't Ford release the Fiesta over here? This is especially puzzling when I'm seeing increasing numbers of old 1992ish Ford Festivas (these are awesome cars btw ) on the roads these days. This is what I...

    American can't make cars?

I just happened to be looking for a smart looking compact car, when I realized that the contenders these days look increasingly ugly. Apart from the VW Rabbit (or Audi variation) and Mini, I can't find a hatchback that looks well proportioned (ie. 15" wheels or larger) and smart. Then I check...

    Lavry DA-10 Appreciation Thread

As a new member of the Lavry DA10 owners' club, I'd like to show my appreciation for this dac. For anyone who's curious, the internal headphone amp doesn't move me at all, but after getting a tube amp, everything else sounds wrong to me tone wise.

the most incredibly stupid lyrics you've ever heard

In reply to the Sir Mix-A-Lot selection, that song is sheer genius, Lloyd. The pitch for Crazy Bitch reminded me of an equally worthless song in Big House's Dollar In My Pocket. Here's a sample: "Ooh, come along. I've got a dollar in my pocket for you." Who says, "come along" in a rock...

What Are You Listening To Right Now? [#6]

I've been reviewing 2006, and I keep going back to Lilly Allen, The Pipettes and Camera Obscura. I tend to stick with nice and upbeat stuff on the run up to spring, though.

    Music like the Verve's E.P. ?

Well that was great timing on my part then. I was just going through another revived thread about the 90s. One of my favorites was and still is Pulp's - His N Hers. It's ambientish, with a bit of a dance influence - still very trippy though. Not to mention brilliant lyrics. This one was recorded...

    Music like the Verve's E.P. ?

I think Mercury Rev's Yerself Is Steam was released a wee bit after The Verve EP, so they should sound the same age. The Mercury Rev lp is not as easy listening as The Verve EP, but still has that alternative psychedelia to it. I think it's a fantastic album. edit: I just realized how old...

pop songs owned by movie scenes

...speaking of Scorsese, I remember that scene in Goodfellas during Henry and Karen's first date when The Crystals' "He Kissed Me" soundtracked that famous steadycam shot through the restaurant. As for Trainspotting, the song that really does it for me is Lou Reed's Perfect Day, in that scene...
