For total silence: is a custom earplug better than foam, etc?

I've recently been wearing the Howard-Leight Max-Lite foam earplugs. The "Max-Lite" are listed as being for small ear canals. I don't have small ear canals, but they still fit snugly while exerting almost no pressure. The small size, superior foam, and "T-shape" make deep insertion simple. For...

Thoughts on a bunch of DACs (and why delta-sigma kinda sucks, just to get you to think about stuff)

If i remember correctly the original title was "why delta-sigma must die".     Delta-Sigma D-to-A chips require (99.9+% of the time) I/V converters. Is it possible the downfall isn't the delta-sigma D-to-A itself, but the typical opamp I/V converter?

    Audeze EL-8: The EL-8 is a must-hear at CES 2015

On its face, reads as if Audeze doesn't believe the $600 headphone market is worthy of respect. Something went wrong here, likely a combination of difficult technical issues and expectations for a large investment to yield a product. Trading on the Audeze name to sell this product is to risk...

Thoughts on a bunch of DACs (and why delta-sigma kinda sucks, just to get you to think about stuff)

I share this confusion. What is there to change after thermal steady-state has been achieved, which I also believe happens in a matter of hours. [Is there some reason it doesn't?]   If it does take 4-7days, we'll probably see someone working on a warm-up acceleration protocol. [Put in oven at...

Jerry Harvey Granted Dual High Frequency Canalphone Patent

Good catch. Thanks for informing the thread.   I'm still learning about this stuff. My naive read was that the patent applied only to 3-way duals, but JH is applying the patent to 1964ears V8 product, which is a 3-way with 4 bass drivers. So I guess the patent is believed to cover any 3-way or...

Fulla (by) Schiit - News, photos, thoughts, impressions, etc.

Proximity is the most likely case. But, I've also heard interference coming from a poorly shielded IF (intermediate frequency) section of a nearby FM tuner. Do you have WCSX tuned elsewhere in the house?   Bob Cordell had to wave a few hands about this 'enhanced' zobel in his Super Gainclone...

    Synergistic Research HOT device

I imagined the electrical testing would characterize the device as a 2-port passive black-box. Sure it is overkill, but I thought that was the point (to show that the device has no effect and to do so without relying on arguments related to the construction.)

    Synergistic Research HOT device

While there is no evidence to support that the HOT functions as an RF filter or has significant capacitance, I've been hoping the tests would check what the HOT looks like electrically out to 1Ghz+ on a network analyzer. Certainly a rational argument can be made that an RF filter on a 10ft...

Jerry Harvey Granted Dual High Frequency Canalphone Patent

Thanks for the guidance Joe, esp pointing out the later independent claims. Also probably good to look at the granted patent instead of the patent application .   Claim 1 in the granted patent is more broad than that of the application as regards high frequency drivers: the "tuned with"...

Jerry Harvey Granted Dual High Frequency Canalphone Patent

This JH patent is a terrible read. I can still only guess what is patented: seems to be calling first on using two separate high-frequency drivers that are tuned together (damper/tube), but don't use the same tuning (damper/tube) as the mid/bass drivers. It is unclear if this patent applies only...

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

I wish I had a speaker system which eliminated the reproduction floor bounce by design, when auditioning a such file [in case the reproduction floor bounce cues interfere with the recorded floor bounce cues]. Short of that, my experience has been that co-incident loudspeakers (KEF uni-Q etc.)...

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

True, when the encoded effects "don't happen" in reproduction it can sound worse and more confused than a straight recoding. I imagine this is why stereo spacializer tech never seems to take hold, because some/many people complain since it sounds bad/worse to them on their systems.   It...

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

I'm waiting for the argument that recordings can't even project a sound image wider than the speakers, or that HRTF trickery can't be used with 2-channel loudspeakers to put images to your side and even behind you. I'm not going to argue that the study is any good, but if your loudspeakers make...
