That's exactly it, you can go loud without knowing how loud you're really going. Because it still sounds really good. Ill keep my volume levels in check though, those headaches are no fun haha.

The newer 650's with the new drivers are supposed to be less dark than the older ones. Imo the HD650 has enough highs, and I'm the type of person who enjoys a bit of sparkle in the upper room. It's not the brightest headphone out there, but it certainly is not a slouch in that departement. 

They sound even more delicious with the sonarworks reference 3 plugin

The fsp is pretty good as reference next to monitors tbh. But I prefered to work on music with the HD650, I haven't had any real suprises when listening back to a mix on my speakers tbh. My yamaha hs7 will brutaly point out any mistake I made in a mix anyway so it's a pretty good combo. 

My HD650 is making me sell my Focal Spirit Pro, it can't catch up tbh. The 650 stomps the Focal Spirit Pro in every way possible tbh  

I've owned both and I too prefer the hd650. 

Probably the way to go tbh!

His statement saying the HD650 sounds like a closed back headphone is enough to disregard anything he's saying until he gets a better amp. Heck even the fiio E7+E9 combo will do, don't forget to put the switch on high gain
